Out of everything that’s happened this season on Game of Thrones, what stood out the best?
In every season of Game of Thrones there are multiple — and by multiple, I mean — tons of special moments that make you love the show even more. Either they made your mouth drop, or you were yelling at the screen, or you were sobbing.
Someway, each episode of Game of Thrones connects with you like you were right there with your favorite characters. I have to say that even though season seven isn’t over yet, and we have the finale tonight, there were still so many great moments I wanted to talk about.
Way more than 30. Unfortunately, I cut down most of my small favorites (no one probably wants to hear how I found this one line funny cause the actor’s cute, right?), and accepted the ones that were everyone’s favorite.
But still, these moments are totally subjective. I might have missed something that you thought was critical. Or maybe you wish I added that one line that actor said because he was cute! Let me know in the comments about what you think about my list!
1. The Freys are dead
When the season opened with a Frey feast, I think we were all a little confused. Especially when Walder Frey talked about the Red Wedding as if it just happened. Did we go back in time? Did we pull a Doctor Who and jump on a dragon in the Time Vortex and go back a couple seasons? Why are we talking about the Red Wedding? I don’t know about you, but I like to think about it as little as possible.
Then, once he started talking about the Red Wedding, he almost seemed – condescending? Okay, now we know something’s going on. As it turns out it’s not Walder at all. It’s Arya, who mastered using Faces to the point that now she can start killing people on her list. It looks like she’s going to keep the faces of the people that she’s killed, just in case they ever come in handy.
I mean, with one face, she was able to slaughter and end an entire house and ally to the Lannisters. While gruesome and bloody, it was a pretty smart thing to do. I also appreciate her sparing the children or his “wives”.
When she takes off the face and says “When people ask, tell them the North remembers,” boom. What a fantastic way to start the season with a huge death to a house, consequently killing a house that’s long been part of Westeros, and the family that killed Cat and Robb. Ah, revenge is sweet.
2. Lady Mormont is a BAMF
Lady Mormont has always been a #BAMF character since we saw her for the first time. At a young age, she’s in charge of the Mormont household, but unlike most ladies, she doesn’t take no for an answer.
When Jon proposes that women need to fight in order to defeat the Night King, many men are (obviously) against it. However, Lady Mormont is quick to set them straight. “I’m not going to sit home knitting while others are fighting.”
Lady Mormont is one of my favorite characters, and it’s great to see her in all her glory, holding up for her household, giving both men and women the ability to fight. Whenever she’s around, we know that people are going to get a stern look from a woman a fraction of their age.
3. Euron Promises a Gift
With the Freys gone, the Lannisters are looking for a new ally. Cersei’s decided to hear out Euron Greyjoy, the man who overthrew the Greyjoy household. He comes to Kings Landing with a plan that involves capturing Yara, Theon, and even Tyrion. However, whether Jamie is just jealous of someone trying to get Cersei’s hand in marriage, or just flat out doesn’t trust Euron, he voices his concerns outright.
Euron comes back with the fact that he loved seeing Jamie cut down his own people, and how wonderful it was to see. It seems like Euron will do anything at this point to show that he is not backing down at this opportunity.
Finally, Cersei declines Euron’s proposal because of his ability to weed out his allies as he sees fit at the time. (I mean, think about it, he just killed his own brother for the crown of the Iron Born!) Still not deterred, Euron says he understands. She needs a gift to know that he’s “serious.” So instead, he promises to bring back a gift for Cersei — one that will allow her to know that he is serious about his proposal.
He’ll be back.
4. Citadel montage
Ah, the Citadel montage. This will absolutely go down in Game of Thrones history as the most disgusting, yet funniest bit D&D has ever put together. At the end of last season, it seemed like everything was on the up and up for Sam, now that he could finally be a Maester. This season, we see what a Maester-in-Training actually has to do every day.
And it’s not fun. The montage of Sam starts with him cleaning out bed pans (to be sensitive), to making sure books were put back in the right place, to dishing out dinner. And repeat. And repeat again. It gets to the point where I’m never sure what’s a bed pan and what he’s dishing out to be eaten if I’m very honest.
Yes, it’s definitely not something that we would expect from Game of Thrones. It was disgusting but funny. And also a good way of showing Sam that just because he made it to where he’s always wanted to be — it’s not gonna be a good time. He’s still going to have to pay his dues and work up the ladder, just like at the Night’s Watch and everywhere else he’s been.
5. Ed Sheeran’s Cameo
This was probably the most talked about part of the first episode than anything else. Many people thought that it was too obvious casting, something that Game of Thrones didn’t need. And it’s true, for casting, they didn’t need Ed Sheeran to boost their ratings or get them back in front. They were already there. But people need to remember it’s not the first time they’ve done this. They often cast musicians and actors for cameos. It’s all part of the fun!
However, for some reason, maybe it’s the ginger hair, he just…didn’t fit in. It was kind of like a bunch of Lannisters getting a private concert by Ed Sheeran who happened to be dressed in Lannister clothes. He didn’t look to be part of the scene, and maybe that’s why people went against it.
Besides how horribly awkward Sheeran’s cameo was, there was also the part with Arya. She came and crashed the private concert, talking with the group. This is also the first time we see a partially unwinded Arya, who openly says she’s going to ‘kill the Queen’. They all laugh it off, and Ed Sheeran continues his set.
6. Daenerys faces Varys (Finally)
While you would think this is something that should have happened when Varys joined #teamDany, alas, she decided to wait until she made it to Dragonstone. Not that I really blame her, to be honest, I wouldn’t have wanted to jinx anything either. Now, before I start off with this particular post, I want everyone to know that Dany is my favorite character. Nothing this girl can do will make me dislike her.
So even though this chat with Varys should have gone on months ago, I just shrugged and went along with it. Dany made some good points. Why should she trust Varys when he’s one of the characters that is notorious for going from house to house for allegiance. In fact, in going House to House, we know that he’s always, in the back, for House Lannister. It’s that kind of trouble that can get you all Dracarys’d on up.
Varys pleads that he will not give her blind loyalty, but believes she is the last hope. She asks him to swear to give her counsel when she is wrong. However, if she finds out he’s been disloyal, she’ll have him burned to death.
Totally doesn’t seem like an overreaction to me.
Especially when you consider that she welcomes Melisandre in with open arms just a couple of scenes later when she calls Dany The Prince(ss) that was Promised.
7. Missandei and Grey Worm
This was another scene that made the headlines, and either warmed our hearts, or we were too busy trying to figure out how exactly it happened. (Don’t lie. You thought it at least once.) Grey Worm is going off to Casterly Rock, with the other Unsullied. The romance between these two characters have been building since they first said “hello.”
He tells her a story of when he was little in the Unsullied camp, and how they used to beat any weakness out of the Unsullied boys. He explains that while he was never the strongest or the best, he never had any weaknesses, until her. She is his weakness because he worries about her all of the time. Missandei admits the same about him.
They begin removing each other’s clothes, and while we should be happy that these two characters are about to consummate their love, I think a lot of us were more worried about the logistics of the situation. We obviously don’t see anything for the rest of the scene, but at least Grey Worm can say he’s probably one of the only Unsullied who has ever got it on with someone else before.
8. Healing Jorah
One of the saddest things that happened to Jorah Mormont was getting touched by something with Greyscale. He was able to keep it at bay, long enough to see Daenerys, who then commanded him to get better. The prognosis looked grim for Jorah, by all the Maesters at the Citadel. He was kept locked away, in a room where no one could touch him.
While normally, people who have greyscale are sent to live with Stone Men, the very people who gave him the greyscale in the first place. They offer him one more night at the Citadel, most likely to kill himself. However, Sam has a different idea. Maybe it’s because of all the grunt work he’s been doing, but Sam finds a way to treat greyscale that worked twice — except it’s banned because the man who invented it died from greyscale. Welp.
Despite the odds not being great, Sam decides to go ahead with the plan to try to help Jorah anyway. He explains to Jorah that he served under Jeor Mormont and that he wasn’t about to let Jorah die. Even though the act of removing greyscale seems incredibly simple to us — simply scraping it off — it must be incredibly painful as Sam gives Jorah multiple things to bite into.
9. Euron’s surprise attack
Well, let it be said that Euron Greyjoy isn’t a liar. When he says he’s going to bring something, he means it. He decides to do what he’d Cersei for help with on his own — get his family back and the Sand Snakes. While they’re in the cabin, discussing who gets to fight first and who gets to kill whom, Euron attacks the ship.
He sends a boarding party across from his ship. While Tyene was guarding her mother below the deck. They end up being the only two that make it out alive or not captured. By the end of the fight, both her sisters were dead, and Yara was captured by Euron. It’s still unclear whether Yara is alive, but what we do know is that Theon had the chance to possibly save her before they took her.
Theon jumps overboard, knowing there’s no other way to survive. While it seems like a major step back in Theon’s character development, we have to hope that there was a chance that he had a plan of some kind. As he was running away.
…Anything’s possible, right?
10. The Queen’s Justice
This moment is aptly named for the episode because it’s exactly what we were all expecting. Some of us were expecting the Queen (Cersei) to get justice but ha! Cersei never has to pay for what she’s done…(well, yet).
No, this moment is for Cersei’s long awaited justice for Myrcella, who was killed by Ellaria right before leaving Dorne with Jamie. She used a potion that is best used during a kiss to kill Myrcella, and not giving any antidote. Not only does she talk about the death of her daughter, she taunts Ellaria about the death of Oberyn Martell. While Oberyn had the Mountain dead, his taunts eventually lost him the battle, and the Mountain was fixed by Pycelle.
Even though this might be Cersei’s evilest moment, it’s truly one to remember. She uses the Long Farewell, the same one that was used to kill Myrcella. The true evil came to Ellaria’s death, which was that she had to watch her daughter die, no matter how long it took.
Basically? Never cross Cersei Lannister, if you didn’t learn that by now. And remember, the Queen holds a grudge.
11. Arrival at Dragonstone
The Arrival at Dragonstone has many moments that someone could probably separate into multiple posts, but for me, it’s all one amazingly awkward moment. And I loved every second of it.
Let’s first start with Tyrion!bro and Jon!bro, who have not forgotten each other’s broship since season one. They immediately quote something that they both said in season one while they were headed up for the wall. They never forgot each other!! If I didn’t ship him with Dany so much, they might have a shot.
Then the awkward talk about Sansa being Tyrion’s wife and how Tyrion never…did..anything…honestly, do we think Jon really cares? (Also do we think Jon believes Sansa would do anything to someone she was obviously made to marry?) I love that there’s so much talk about Sansa’s wedding nights in this episode. Leave the poor girl alone.
Finally, and what has to be the most awkward moment is when the low-flying Drogon and Viserion fly over Jon and Davos, essentially freaking them out. Don’t worry guys; they’re just the security.
DETECTED: Possible father figure.
12. “This is Jon. He’s King of the North.”
We all know how awkward it is to meet someone with a lot of titles (or in our cases, a lot of school academic awards), who like to flaunt them, and we sit there like…”Hi?”
Unfortunately, Jon Snow had a case of this when he met Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Breaker of Chains, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, The Mother of Dragons, The Breaker of Chains, and Lady of Dragonstone. (Those are just on her Wikipedia!)
Jon, who has all his life been a bastard and therefore had no titles to claim, looked at Davos for help. Davos, who also probably would have failed any class where he had to speak in front of people, said “This is Jon. He’s King of the North.”
We know now that he’s so much more than King of the North, he’s Jon of the House Targaryen, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, Leader of the Army against the White Walkers….I mean, throughout the seasons, he’s racked up some titles. But because he’s Jon and Jon never thinks about himself, he’s just…Jon.
While a good observer of this scene would talk about how it showed the differences between Daenerys, who grew up knowing she was part of a royal family of Westeros, and Jon, who knew he was only a bastard, I honestly just found this really freaking funny.
This is what happens when you don’t prepare, guys!
13. Bran comes home
Though there isn’t much to say about Bran since Bran is now a fortune cookie in action, this might be a shorter one. But we had to include his arrival back in Winterfell! Bran and Meera come to the door, looking for Lady Stark. When Sansa sees her brother, she can’t believe it. Honestly, a lot of us couldn’t believe Bran made it back to Winterfell. He survived being North of the Wall, the three eyed raven, and he even got a hair cut!
Sansa takes him down to the Godswood where Sansa admits that he’s the true Lord of Winterfell. But since he became the three-eyed raven, he’s not allowed to take on any titles. Confused, Sansa asks what he means. He answers with thoughts on how beautiful she looked on her wedding night to Ramsay Bolton.
- Weird. Don’t be looking in on your sister during her wedding night! Especially if she wasn’t consenting!
- Why are we all so obsessed about who Sansa did or didn’t have sex with. We all have a lot more things to worry about, like, for instance, where Bran got his hair cut.
Sansa, who is obviously very confused, leaves the Godswood, hoping to God that Bran isn’t crazy because she certainly doesn’t need that in her life right now.
Even though this scene is filled with awkwardness, it’s the awkward family moments that are the true family moments, right?
14. The Second Queen’s Justice
If this isn’t the MOMENT OF MOMENTS in season seven, then I don’t know what is. Everyone bow down because this is the moment of all. We’ve been through six episodes in this season, and I still consider this the best moment.
Jaime goes to Highgarden all ~*~high and ~*~mighty because he has poison to kill Olenna. Before doing so, like all villains in stories, he explains his evil plan. They led the Targaryen army astray (*gasp*!) and Casterly Rock has no real value now (NO!), and that he knows Euron would be destroying the fleet attacking Casterly Rock. Meanwhile, the Lannister army will watch from afar, when they were thought to be guarding, something Jaime learned from Robb Stark.
They talk for a bit about Jamie’s life and his decision, because who better to share your life problems with the woman you’re about to end? Olenna tells Jaime that Cersei will be the end of him.
Knowing that this is her end, she sees that he pours two glasses of wine, one has to be poison. She asks if there’s going to be pain, and he promises that there is no pain, no suffering from this poison.
Olenna nods, saying it was awful the way Joffrey dies. She admits that she was the one that put the poison in the drink, but she never wanted him to suffer so much, but she’d never seen the poison work before.
Oh, Queen of Thorns. You truly earned your title.
15. Littlefinger gets psyched out by Bran
It takes a lot to psyche out Littlefinger, but when Bran comes back, he’s pretty much able to psych out anyone. Littlefinger, who apparently still holds on to everything, comes into Bran’s room with the dagger that was used to try to kill him after he fell from the tower. With Bran still mostly the three eyed raven, and not really attached to what’s going on around him.
Littlefinger tries to spark his interest by telling him that this dagger was basically what started the War of the Five Kingdoms. (But what does Bran care? He’s been North of the Wall the whole time!) Littlefinger then also tries to talk about everything Bran went through to get back through. Bran replies with “chaos is a ladder,” which Littlefinger said to Varys at one point, again, before this all happened. There’s no way Bran could have heard it, so he must have seen it.
Littlefinger quickly leaves as fast as he can to get out of that situation, obviously worried now about Bran. Littlefinger has some plan that has to do with the Stark house and Winterfell. With Bran being able to know things that happened a long time ago, is it possible that he could ruin it all?
This is a good scene because it’s one of the very few times that we see Littlefinger at the other end of being speechless. Littlefinger always has the last word, always knows the right thing to say. But with Bran, there’s no way for him to beat someone that can see the past, present, and future.
16. Meera says goodbye to Bran
I always feel really bad for Meera, because she’s lost so much since this all began. She lost her brother, Jojen, and she still went on, working with Bran to get him to be the three-eyed-raven. When she comes in after Littlefinger leaves and sees Bran in a wheelchair, she realizes she isn’t needed anymore.
She says it’s time for her to come home to the Neck since he doesn’t need her help. Bran only nods, before looking out the window again. Finally, we see Meera feel the anger that she’s been holding in all this time. The anger for the loss of Hodor, Summer the dire-wolf, and Jojen. How could Bran just sit there and not care?
It was a great moment that brought a little bit of dimension to a two-dimensional character. It also shows that while everyone else is tip toeing around him, Meera won’t. She’s been with him for too much to care how he feels about what she says. In fact, I wish Meera had stayed to knock some sense into Bran. Maybe she could have stopped him from talking in Chinese food cookie fortunes.
As much as Meera wasn’t a huge character, it was still a loss of a great character and one that had the potential to be even greater as the show went on.
17. Arya returns to Winterfell
After a long awaited return, many “almosts” and “just missed ’ems,” Arya finally rides up to Winterfell. However, she wasn’t greeted with love and affection by people she’s known all her life, she’s met with two (slightly annoying) guards who tell her she can’t be let in. She asks for Lady Stark and says that if she is who she says she is, Sansa would be very upset that she wasn’t allowed in.
She was told to sit while the guards figured out what to do, which was really the two of them fighting over who wanted to get Sansa. Because Arya’s part ninja by now, leaves the two guards, heading down to the crypt.
When the guards try to explain to Sansa what happened, and how she was asking for a Rodrick or a Luwin. Of course, these were the men who used to work at Winterfell before the Boltons took over. Sansa knew it was actually Arya and where the first place she would go would be.
She finds Arya in the crypts, looking at Ned’s statue. They talk about how it looks nothing like him, and “how everyone in the world who knew his face is dead”. They also have a small talk about who killed Joffrey, and that’s when Arya reveals her list of names. Names of people she’s going to kill. It takes Sansa off guard, but she doesn’t quite believe her sister.
Which leads us to…
18. Arya sees Bran
Sansa takes Arya to see Bran at the Godswood, where Bran seems to spend most of his time. Elated, Arya hugs Bran, but immediately realizes he’s not like he was before. He says to her that he saw her at the crossroads. While she takes this literally, it’s probably the Crossroads, which is where she saw Hot Pie again.
Sansa explains that Bran is having visions again, the same way you say that your younger sibling is “playing with their imaginary friend”. Then Bran drops that he knew Arya was going to Kings Landing to kill the Queen because Cersei was on her list of names. This confirms what Arya was talking about before, and now Sansa’s pretty sure she’s the only normal one in the bunch.
They talk about the Valerian dagger on Bran’s lap and he said Littlefinger gave it to him. Sansa warns him that Littlefinger doesn’t do anything without expecting reciprocity. Bran doesn’t seem to care, and gives it to Arya, saying it shouldn’t be “wasted on a cripple.”
As they walk back to the castle, Brienne and Podrick sees them, and Podrick notes that she fulfilled her oath to Catelyn Stark all those years ago.
19. The epic Arya/Brienne duel
Okay so it’s not a “duel,” but it is something that all the fans have been waiting for. Brienne is practicing her sword fighting with Podrick, and Arya asks if she can join. She immediately hesitates, saying she can find the Master of Arms, but Arya wants to fight the woman who beat the Hound.
Immediately, they start, and Brienne begins using the combat training she was taught in Westeros, while Arya uses the Water Dance training from Syrio Forel, as well as the faceless men. This turned into one of the biggest moments of the season, as the two are quite different. Gwendoline Christie is 6’3, and Maisie Williams is 5’1, making the fight even more impressive. Arya continues to win until Brienne knocks Needle out of her hand, but Arya just switches to the dagger Bran just gave her.
Finally, they come to a stalemate, and while Arya and Brienne revel in how much fun they had, Sansa looks nervous about Arya might be able to do.
20. Jon shows Daenerys his dragon…glass
Before the big drama happens in the episode, another one of the iconic moments of season seven was probably when Jon takes Daenerys into the Dragonglass mountain, showing her the drawings that were made by the First Men and the Children of the Forest. There is no hostility here, just Jon trying to show Dany how long these people have been fighting.
As Dany looks around, she asks if the First Men and the Children were fighting each other, but based on symbols; there was no fighting. They were fighting together against the Night King. He explains that they were able to it then, and now it’s time for Dany and Jon to come together and be the next generation of fighters.
Despite the fact that Daenerys eventually says no, the chemistry between the two characters is palpable in this episode. Especially in this scene. Many people who fought against the ship of a man and his “aunt” couldn’t help but be swayed.
Unfortunately, the passion ends when Dany realizes something is wrong.
21. Drogon: ATTAAAAAACK!
Was I mentioning famous scenes? Because this will be the most famous scene in probably all of Game of Thrones. After hearing that the Lannisters and the Greyjoys completely ruined the battle plan for Casterly Rock, Daenerys decides to take the Dothraki and one of her Dragons and attack them at Highgarden where they were getting food and paying off debt with Tyrell’s gold.
As Jamie and Bronn were celebrating and Jamie hands Bronn a large pile of silver for his work, Bronn all of the sudden hears thunder. The Thunder of 100,000 Dothraki ready to kill as many Lannisters as they can. Bronn wants Jamie to go, but Jamie says they’ll survive if they hold their own.
This is all fine and well, until Daenerys comes in, riding on the back of Drogon. With the simple command of Dracarys, Drogon begins blowing fire and essentially killing multiple parts of the Lannister army, including anything they had collected. Daenerys turns to obliterating men side by side, just trying to fight as much of the army as she could.
Eventually, they use Qyburn’s tool to try to take out Drogon, which does put a bolt into Drogon, but it doesn’t stop him. Eventually, he flies down so Dany can take it out, and that’s when Jamie decides to make what could be the stupidest move in all of his career.
22. Jamie almost dies
Seeing Daenerys on the ground, and in a pretty open field, Jamie decides to charge at her with his sword. Tyrion, who’s watching the battle from far away, mutters “run, you idiot.”, but Jamie has never been one to run away from a challenge. He sees Dany’s a potential target, and he’s going to take the shot.
Unfortunately, what he doesn’t see is the huge dragon leaning over Dany, who is paying attention. As Jaime gets closer, Drogon shields his mother from the fire before letting spewing fire at Jamie. At the end of Spoils of War, we don’t know who’s alive and who’s dead. At the very last second, someone pushes Jamie into the water, and we see him sink.
Going onto the next episode, it does turn out that Bronn, the person who pushed him, and Jamie are safe. Jamie realizes just how powerful Dany and her dragons are, and that they’re in extreme danger if they don’t figure out a way to neutralize her.
And how is he gonna tell Cersei?
23. Burning Up the Tarlys
Besides the fact that I now have the old Jonas Brothers’ song Burning Up in my head, this was a scene that definitely showed Dany’s impulsivity. After she’s beaten the Lannister army down to crumbles and soot, she asks who will bend the knee.
Many fighters are quick to do so, especially as Dany talks about how she wants to break the wheel of power, which Cersei is against. She offers them a choice: bend the knee or die. Almost no one is standing by the end of her speech, except for the Tarlys: Randyll and his son, Dickon. To make a show for the rest of the men still standing, she makes a show out of the Tarlys.
Tyrion tries to intervene, saying they only just became a Lannister fighter, but the Tarlys say they are here for their queen – Cersei. While Tyrion tries to get Dany to let them sit in a cell or sent to the Wall. Randyll Tarly refuses that punishment, as she is not his queen. With no other option, Daenerys plans to set the father on fire.
Dickon, his son, speaks up and says she must kill the both of them, though that would be the end of their household. Dany does not care, and both men are burned to death by Drogon.
*It is important to note here that this is the Tarly household as in, Samwell Tarly. If the show decides to, they could easily have Sam be next in line for Lord Tarly. However, he was stripped of all titles when he joined the Night’s Watch.
24. Gilly finds a very important letter
At Oldtown, Sam is tired with all of the work he has to do. He’s doing some of his work with Gilly, who’s reading out facts from one of the books Sam has. While she’s listing everything this Maester recorded – she finds something very important. Only it was barely acknowledged in the episode.
Gilly tells Samwell the High Septon issued an annulment for “Prince Ragger (Rhaegar)” so that he could marry another woman in Dorne. This is most likely Lyanna Mormont and has to do with Jon Snow. If Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, and the marriage is legal, that gives him a better right to the throne than even Daenerys.
This small bit of information is incredibly important, but it was never developed further as Sam decided to leave Oldtown. Tired of the rules and inscribing other people’s work, he leaves Oldtown, trying to make his old adventures instead about reading about other people’s adventures.
Even though this is a great step for Sam, I can’t help but think that if he listened to Gilly, the season would be completely different. Hopefully, it’s reintroduced in the season finale.
25. Gendry returns!
Jon meets with Daenerys after getting a letter from Bran, who had a vision of Nightwalkers at Eastwatch-by-the-sea. He pleads with Daenerys to help and asks what they’re going to do. Tyrion proposes that they bring a wight south to Kings Landing to show Cersei, to help get an army to help defeat the Night King.
Gendry is working at the same blacksmith shop he was when he left King’s Landing, saying it was the safest place since he’d never been found. When Davos tells him to bring some swords with him, he responds that he’s never learned how to fight, only bringing a hammer he made. Being Robert Baratheon’s illegitimate son, the hammer has half a stag carved into it. When Gendry returns to Dragonstone, he tells Jon of his heritage, that Robert Baratheon was his father. He wants to join the group going North.
Jorah, who had just returned from the Citadel, offers to go out beyond the wall and capture a wight. Daenerys tries to get Jon to stay by saying she did not permit him to leave, but he says that he is King in the North, and to trust him as he trusted her.
Tormund and the Brotherhood without Banners also agree to go, and with the seven of them: Jon, Jorah, Gendry, Tormound, the Hound, Thoros, and Beric, are all set to go North of the Wall.
26. Something’s happening at Winterfell
In Behind the Wall, the disdain between the two sisters comes to a crescendo when Arya presents a letter that Littlefinger had. It was the letter that Sansa wrote to Robb in season one trying to get him bend the knee for Joffrey. Sansa tries to explain that she was “forced” to write the letter.
Arya says that she saw Sansa at the execution and she did nothing to stop it. Sansa finally says that she always tried to come home while Arya traveled the world for her pursuit. Sansa tried to tell Arya that this is exactly what Cersei would want. Arya doesn’t hear it and asks what the Northerners would say if they saw this, especially Lyanna Mormont, who is younger than Sansa was then.
Later, Sansa is digging through Arya’s things, trying to find the letter, presumably. Instead, she finds the faces that Arya has. She explains where she got them and asks if Sansa truly believes Jon is the right King. The way Arya acts is curious, and for a minute, you think she’s going to hurt Sansa when she pulls out her dagger, but then she leaves it for Sansa.
Is it a sign saying to kill someone else? Or that Sansa’s in danger?
27. Tormund and The Hound
While walking behind the wall, Tormund and the Hound are talking about sex (as men do), and he expressions his infatuation for Brienne of Tarth. He says that she’s nearly as tall as The Hound, and talks about having “monstrous” babies with her. When The Hound realizes who he’s talking about, he’s shocked that someone would find Brienne so appealing.
Tormund is just shocked that someone knows of Brienne, and asks what kind of guys she likes, specifically if she likes “ginger guys.” It’s a great scene that takes place in an otherwise serious episode because it’s just like a regular conversation.
They wouldn’t have to be North of the Wall to have this conversation — Tormund’s infatuation with Brienne has been pretty obvious since the beginning of the season. He’s often watched her win at fighting with Podrick and calling Podrick a lucky man. It just goes to show that the wildlings don’t change, they don’t find anything North of the Wall more exciting than having sex.
28. Surrounded
The seven men (hereafter referred to as Suicide Squad), finally kill one wight after a small attack. They send Gendry to get a raven to Dany since he’s the fastest runner. Soon, though the group finds themselves surround on a patch of ice frozen over a lake. The lake is still not frozen enough for people to walk on, so the Suicide Squad stands on a small rock of ice, completely surrounded.
While Gendry finally gets the message to Davos, the suicide squad wake up and realize that Thoros is dead, and therefore Beric has no more ways to come back to life after being resurrected six times. They continue to wait for Dany, and eventually, The Hound starts throwing rocks at the White Walkers. One of the rocks slides across the river, revealing it’s safe to walk across.
As soon as the army of Wights ascends on them, there are many “almost” fatalities. Jorah almost dies, Tormund almost dies, and just when it seems that Dany might be too late, she shows up with all three of her dragons. She fights the wights with Dragonfire, killing most of them.
The Night King himself comes up, getting a javelin of ice, throwing it right into Viserion’s neck. He plunges into the ice, dead. Daenerys has lost her first dragon. This does show the Queen that she isn’t indestructible, and all it takes is the right weapon, and she could lose her dragons.
29. Benjen saves Jon’s life, and Jon bends the knee
While most of the Suicide Squad are scrambling to get up on the dragon to fly away, Jon tries to fight his way to the Night King, which would kill every Wight. This is said to be a direct parallel to what Jaime tried to do to Daenerys at the Battle at Highgarden.
Jon tries to blend in with all of the White Walkers, but he gets caught. Before he could get killed, his Uncle Benjen, who hasn’t seen Jon since the first season, rides up on horseback. He gives Jon his horse, and allows the White Walkers to “kill him.” It isn’t sure whether or not Benjen will come back as a White Walker, or if he can’t because he was already partly dead.
Jon wakes up in a boat, with Dany by his side. He calls her Dany, and she replies that only her brother, Viserys called her that, and he would not be in good company. Jon takes a breath, and looks at her, and asks if he can call her his queen. It might be a cheesy couple of moments, but if you didn’t say “aww” at least once, you have no heart.
30. Viserion, the White Walker
What do you call a White Walker who can fly? A white flyer? The White Walker army gained a huge advantage when they were able to resurrect the dragon. After all this time, after the dragons being Dany’s babies for so many seasons, now one of them is on the opposing army. A dead dragon flying.
We don’t know much about what will happen yet, but what we do know is, any dragon that you name after your evil brother, can’t have a good ending. Notice it wasn’t Drogon after Khal Drogo, Rhaegon like her brother, Rhaegar, no, it Viserion, like her brother Viserys. Some things are just meant to be.
In the final episode of the season, in the last few minutes, we finally see what a White Flyer will do. With very little help or and with ease, Viserion completely tears down the legendary wall, separating two worlds. With the new dragon, who knows how easy or hard their fight will be.
31. Jamie finally stands up
For a minute in Game of Thrones, it looked like everything had been sorted. Cersei was going to cooperate, they were going to put a hold on The War of Five Kingdoms (until GRRM can write another book) to focus on the Great War. Perfect!
But things never are as they look, and while Jamie is busy working with his men to figure out a way North, Cersei excuses them. She explains that she never planned to help Daenerys and Jon. Jamie says they have no Army even if the Great War is won or lost, but Cersei has a plan. She worked with Euron Greyjoy behind Jamie’s back and found mercenaries to use as an army in Essos.
When Jamie says he intends to honor his pledge ride North, Cersei says that counts as Treason. He tells her to kill him then, and the Mountain draws his sword. However, Cersei never kills Jamie.
It is a question though, if now that Jamie has chosen to leave to help the Northern Army if she will see him as a traitor and no longer part of the Lannister house at all. This could be a huge crack the Lannister rule on the Iron Throne, even if Euron Greyjoy joins her as his queen.
32. Littlefinger’s death
All season we’ve watched Littlefinger play the girls against each other, to the point where many of us were confused. How do two sisters go from wanting to see each other, back to the antics of when they were children? Arya alluding to death in front of Sansa, and handing her the dagger? Sansa truly believing Arya was capable of such things?
And then, we started to see Littlefinger starting to be a catalyst in the background. When he helped save Winterfell from Ramsay Bolton, he was immediately in Sansa’s debt. He let her linger and feel beholden to him, up to the very end. Even in the last episode, we were lead to believe that she was using his council to help figure out what Arya was doing.
I reality, it was so much better. Sansa spent all that time learning how Littlefinger works, and they also got Bran to use his warg powers. The three of them together were able to convict him of the murder of Lysa Arryn and conspiring to kill Ned Stark, among other treasons. In the end, Arya got to scratch one name off her list: Littlefinger.
Aegon Targaryen II
Since last season, we knew that Bran could see the fact that a baby was with Lyanna Stark, and he saw her whispering to someone, though we didn’t know what she said. This time, we were finally able to get a glimpse.
When Sam rushed into Bran’s room, Bran told him that Jon was really a bastard of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, making his name Jon Sand, which is what Bastards are called in Dorne. Sam says the High Septon that did the ceremony wrote about an annulment between Rhaegar and his former wife, and a marriage with Lyanna. This makes Jon a true Targaryen, which, as we know, the truest heir to the Iron Throne.
When we go back to the place where Bran had the vision, we hear Lyanna say. His name is Aegon Targaryen.
So…um…Mazel Tov?
The scene we were all waiting for
It has been a season of fans trying desperately not to give in to the incest-shipping ways of the Targaryens. Most are still firmly on their old #TeamDead ships, where the other person died, but it looked like D&D were not gonna miss the chance. I don’t honestly know if Jonerys was planned, or the actors just had such great chemistry, but I found myself wanting them to get together All. Season.
And many people ended up being with me. When Daenerys tells Jon about the woman who killed her baby, he offers her hope that maybe her womb still works, and she could have a child. Later in the episode, we see Jon sneak into her bedroom, followed by a scene that was super steamy in the few minutes they showed.
Were they trying for an alliance baby, or just for fun? I support this 100% either way. But…will Dany feel so hot when she finds out the man she just slept with is her nephew who has a better claim to the throne?
Uhhh…Mozel Tav?

Just as the episode is wrapping up, and our biggest concern is where Jamie’s going to go, we go to the Wall. Tormund is watching from high up, complaining about the height. All of the sudden, he sees a huge army of White Walkers walking past the forest beyond the wall and into view.
Well, this isn’t good.
As if a huge army of very-hard-to-kill beings isn’t bad enough…remember Viserion? They sure do. One of the White Walkers is flying Viserion to the wall, and now he doesn’t breathe fire, he breathes Ice. Like a really messed up version of Elsa. The Night Watchers see what’s coming and they try to run to get away, but the dragon is too fast and his breath of ice is too strong.
The wall is decimated completely, a wall that has stood for centuries. He blows it down to nothing, and the Army continues on. Not only is this a horrible way to end the series that we have to wait a year to see, WHERE IS EVERYONE??

Are they all dead?? Don’t tell me we have to wait and see if Tormund actually gets Brienne!
