The Handmaid’s Tale exceeds expectations after its two-episode season two premiere on Wednesday.

Blessed be the fruit, The Handmaid’s Tale is back! Season two premiered on Wednesday, and as expected brought in high ratings for its first two episodes. According to Rotten Tomatoes, episode 1, “June”, came in at 90%, while episode 2, “Unwomen”, scored perfectly with 100%! It comes as no surprise that the series shattered expectations given the success of the first season.

The current season overall is labeled as “Certified Fresh” at 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Holy moly, right? When compared to the first season, ratings are fairly comparable. However, the series premiere, “Offred”, was given a 100% on the Tomatometer, scoring higher than the season two premiere. The second episode in both seasons, however, scored at a 100%!

While we wait for the ratings to come in for future episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, it is interesting to reflect back on how the first season did overall. While episodes 1,2, 4, 5, 6, and 9 all scored a 100% last year, the remaining scored between 75-90%.

The Handmaid’s Tale tells the story of a not-so-distant dystopian future that is overruled by a totalitarian government known as “Gilead”. In this world, women are subjected to a caste system and given societal responsibilities that dictate their entire lives. The series follows Offred/June and her rise to rebelling against this world.

Season two will focus on June’s pregnancy and her escape from Gilead, and also take the story to the dreaded Colonies where “unpeople” are banished for punishment. The series stars Elisabeth Moss, Alexis Bledel, Samira Wiley, Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, and Madeline Brewer.
