13 Reasons Why will not have a suicide in season two, but will instead focus on sexual assault.

We are about a week away from the premiere of the second season of 13 Reasons Why and there are a lot of questions as to where the narrative will go after Hannah’s suicide. Creator Brian Yorkey spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the second season and stated that there would not be another suicide, but the central focus would be on sexual assault.

More from Netflix

Season one focused on the suicide of Hannah Baker and the thirteen tapes she left behind for those she blamed for her state of mind. The first season was extremely controversial and received a lot of backlash for its graphic nature and narrative. However, the second season will explore the aftermath of the suicide and focus on sexual assault.

Season one ended with many questions and a lot of loose ends pertaining to more than one character. In season two these questions will hopefully be answered as the story will revolve around sexual assault, gun violence amongst many other topics.

We will see Jessica (Alisha Boe) dealing with her own sexual assault, what Tyler (Devin Druid) plans to do with the gun and explosives he bought, and how Clay (Dylan Minnette) will deal with life following Hannah’s suicide.

Perhaps the most anticipated storyline is what will happen to Bryce after Clay taped his confession in season one. Will there be a trial? Will he be sentenced for his crimes? And will Mr. Porter learn to be a better counselor after turning a blind eye to Hannah’s struggles? We sure hope so!

According to Yorkey, season two will explore a number of sexual assaults that connect back to one of the athletic teams at the school which will surface due to a series of Polaroid pictures. He also talks about the process of going this direction for season two:

"“When we first developed it, we had these discussions about whether it was realistic to think that serial sexual abuse could be kept secret by so many people for so long. Over the course of the summer, we watched events unfold in our culture that confirmed to us that yes, unfortunately, it is possible for severe sexual abuse at a very high, consistent level to be kept secret by many, many people, and for institutions to be complicit in it. So that’s very much a part of our story in season two, and we’re hoping that enters the conversation around the show, particularly because it is something that girls even at a very young age are dealing with in our culture, and it’s something that needs to change.”"
