Modern Love, a half-hour comedy series, has been picked up by Amazon!

Amazon Studios is looking to add its ever-growing slate and has done so yet again by adding Modern Love. The series is based on a New York Times column that discussed topics of love and connection. It will be a romantic anthology series and is going to be written, produced, and directed by Sing Street’s John Carney.

There will be eight stand-alone episodes and each episode will evaluate the many perspectives of love–romantic, sexual, friendly, etc. Jennifer Salke, the new head of Amazon Studios, spoke about Modern Love during a Q&A session with Deadline and also discussed Amazon’s decision to pass on Making Friends, which would have been a multi-camera comedy.

When Amazon first began creating their own original content, they would release pilots to multiple shows to gauge audience interest. However, more recently, they have started to give many of their content straight-to-series orders instead.

This is not the first attempt at creating a series based on the Modern Love NYT column. Originally, it was meant to be on HBO and made its made to the pilot stage at Lifetime. This series has been a long time in the making, and it will be interesting to see the direction Amazon Studios will take it in.
