Amazon’s highly anticipated The Lord of the Rings series has found its writers!

The Lord of the Rings Amazon series is slowly but surely inching towards becoming a reality. At the 2018 TCAs, Amazon announced their extensive search for writers is finally coming to an end after they bringing on writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay for the series.

The series will be based on Peter Jackson’s blockbuster movie franchise The Lord of the Rings based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Payne and McKay were selected from a shortlist in a search that was overseen by Amazon’s head of genre Sharon Tal Yguado.

More from Amazon Prime

"“The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity. We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”"

The series already has a multi-season deal in place which is close to $250 million and will be based on Tolkien’s fantasy novels. Amazon Studios in conjunction with the Tolkien Estate are producing the Lord of the Rings series.

In potentially exciting news, Amazon has been talking to Jackson about being involved with the series and possibly using his sets in New Zealand. How epic would that be?!

The plot will be set in Middle Earth and explore storylines that take place before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. There are some conflicts on what aspects can and can’t be used in the series, so it will be interesting to see where that goes. However, Amazon’s head Jennifer Salke said while the movies are not being recreated, we will see characters that we love.

Payne and McKay have been working together since high school and recently worked on Jungle Cruise and Star Trek 4.
