Star Trek is expanding its universe with a new animated series on CBS All Access by the writer and executive producer of Rick & Morty.

Star Trek is going big with its universe on CBS All Access, and it shows no signs of stopping. The latest venture is in the form of an animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks, that has received a two-season order by CBS All Access.

The writer and executive producer of Rick and Morty, Mike McMahan, is the creative mind behind this project who has been a long-time Star Trek fan according to a report by Deadline. The animated series will be about the support crew of one of the less famous ships in Starfleet and will mark CBS All Access’ first venture into the animated world.

The series will be created by Alex Kurtzman’s studio, Secret Hideout, which has been responsible for the Star Trek expansion. Kurtzman was smitten over McMahan from the get-go when he first heard his pitch:

More from CBS

"“Mike won our hearts with his first sentence: ‘I want to do a show about the people who put the yellow cartridge in the food replicator so a banana can come out the other end.’ His cat’s name is Riker. His son’s name is Sagan. The man is committed. He’s brilliantly funny and knows every inch of every Trek episode, and that’s his secret sauce: he writes with the pure, joyful heart of a true fan. As we broaden the world of ‘Trek’ to fans of all ages, we’re so excited to include Mike’s extraordinary voice.”"

If you’re a long-time fan of the franchise, then this animated series will be right up your alley as it explores the less appreciated characters that often go unnoticed. McMahan has been dabbling with the idea of Star Trek related work for quite some time and in 2011 got on Twitter to post episode plots of a fake season of The Next Generation. It’s safe to say he’s committed and will do justice to the animated series.

His life-long love as a Trekkie fan will bring an authentic and genuine touch to the animated series and as he stated in an interview, ” a surreal and wonderful dream come true to be a part of this new era of Star Trek.”

McMahan is no stranger to successful animated shows as he is the head writer and executive producer of Rick and Morty. We look forward to seeing his work come to life on CBS All Access, and can’t wait to find out the premiere date (fingers crossed, it’s soon!).
