Star Trek: Discovery has released a new trailer for the upcoming second season featuring family reunions amidst a furious fight for the future of the universe and plenty of a new sexy young bearded Spock.

Here are five cool things from the new Star Trek: Discovery trailer.

Bearded Spock

Obviously. Ethan Peck as the newest incarnation of the iconic character features prominently in the new trailer but shows us a new side to the Vulcan’s persona – the scruffy, adventurous side.

Our first look of Spock is of a man with over-long, luxurious hair and a full, dark beard. It looks good on him, although it seems likely that the look is more from enforced neglect than by choice. Might Spock have been in a situation in which he didn’t have access to a razor?

It is surprising to see, considering the only time we’ve seen Spock with facial hair of any kind is in the Mirrorverse. Wait, is this Mirrorverse Spock? I think probably not – but what if it was? He does appear to attack a Starfleet medical officer.

And there’s more to him than just the beard. In a scene that echoes our first introduction to his adopted sister Michael Burnham, Spock “smiles” in anticipation of charging into danger. He’s having fun.

Family Reunions

We’ve heard from Michael and Sarek both that Spock’s relationship with both of them are somewhat strained. We see in the trailer that Michael and Spock have the opportunity to reunite and work together, although it’s obvious there’s some tension to work out.

Spock seems angered by the risks Michael took to save him, perhaps having put the universe at risk by doing so. He says that the future may be determined by their actions and that a great responsibility is at hand.

Given the trouble caused by Michael’s recklessness in season one, she may have something to learn from Spock’s considered approach, but he may have something to learn from her about sacrifice.

It will be interesting to see them interact and learn more about their family dynamic.

Old School Nostalgia

There’s an interesting mix of uniforms floating around this trailer, mostly as worn by Captain Christopher Pike. He appears both in the Discovery uniforms we know from season one, but also in a gold classic style uniform as worn on The Original Series.

It’s unclear why the switch from one to the other or why officers who all work for Starfleet would be wearing such drastically different uniforms. Whatever the reason, we get a dose of nostalgia when Pike shows up wearing his command gold. And that subtle asymmetrical collar looks pretty fly, too.

In addition, there’s also something nostalgic about Anson Mount’s delivery of certain lines, a certain style that reminds us of the Original Series and gives this very modern show a classical flavor.

Science!

One of my favorite things from season one was how much fun Tilly and Stamets had just doing science.

As frustrating and painful as the scientific process sometimes was, there was never a moment you doubted they loved what they were doing, that they found as much joy in the process as they did in the discovery.

To paraphrase them both, science is f—king cool! And there’s plenty of science being done in this trailer, which is made to look about as exciting as any of the action sequences. I love how Discovery continues the mission of Gene Roddenberry not only by placing importance on scientific discovery but by putting joy in it.

Georgiou, Section 31, and the Red Angel

Mirrorverse Georgiou is back and looking devious as ever. She has joined the shady Starfleet organization Section 31, specializing in “covert ops” and “threat assessment.”

Its Section 31’s opinion that the supposed Big Bad, the Red Angel, should be considered dangerous. Michael is clearly suspicious and scared of Georgiou.

And assuming that any adversary in Star Trek is anything as simple as good or bad would be foolish, or that initial impressions are necessarily the correct ones.

Spock tells of an apocalyptic vision shown to him by the Red Angel, but it could be more of a warning than a threat. And if that’s the case, why would Section 31 want to discredit or misinterpret that warning?

Fascinating.
