It's going to be a weird year for HBO and MAX. There are a bunch of big shows coming to HBO in 2024, but a few of the biggest TV shows are sitting out 2024 and will instead premiere in 2025. We're talking about The White Lotus season 3, Euphoria season 3, And Just Like That season 3, The Last of Us season 2, and Welcome to Derry.
There are still a bunch of big HBO shows coming in 2024. We picked seven of the biggest titles on the way this year. Let's get the list started with the biggest shows of 2024, House of the Dragon season 2.
House of the Dragon season 2
- Estimated Release Date: Summer 2024
- Created by: Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin
- Cast: Matt Smith, Emma D'Arcy, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Jefferson Hall, Olivia Cooke, Harry Collett, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, and more
House of the Dragon season 2 returns in 2024. HBO announced the new season premieres this summer. We still don't know the release date yet, but that should be coming soon. It's been a long time between seasons. The first season premiered in the summer of 2022, so we're expecting about two full years between the first and second seasons.
At the end of the first season, war is coming to Westeros. In the fallout of King Viserys I Targaryen's death, the infighting among the Targaryens has already begun. It's Rhaenyra and Daemon in one corner, and Alicent Hightower and her family in the other, and a lot of dragons in between. We can't wait to see what's going to happen in the new season.
Overall, it seems like House of the Dragon is one of the favorites for the award season. The first season was nominated for a few awards, but it was in the same categories as Succession. Because of the strike delays, there will be typical favorites to win at the Emmys that won't be eligible next cycle.
Unfortunately, the second season is also two episodes shorter than the first season. It's fine, of course, but I loved how the series followed the original Game of Thrones seasons. The series is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood, so if you want to know what happens. You can get started now and hopefully finish by the time the show premieres.

Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12
- Release Date: Feb. 4, 2024
- Created by: Larry David
- Cast: Larry David, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, J. B. Smoove, Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, and more
Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12 premieres on HBO and MAX on Feb. 4, 2024. It's the final season of the hit series from Seinfeld co-creator Larry David. The show premiered on HBO in 2000 and has been going strong two decades later.
For those who haven't seen Curb Your Enthusiasm, the series follows Larry David playing a version of himself and getting to a lot of trouble along the way. If you're a fan of David's observation style of comedy, you're going to love this show. I would recommend it to any and everyone!
It's hard to picture HBO without Curb Your Enthusiasm, honestly. The fact that there are only 10 episodes left of one of the best comedies of my lifetime is surreal. I can only imagine what it feels like for those who have been on the show for more than 20 years.
It makes sense why Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming to an end. It's just going to be a sad day for a lot of fans when that happens. Hopefully, we'll see David create another series, but there's no doubt Curb will live on. I just hope it gets added to Netflix to introduce the series to new audiences. Hey, stranger things have happened.
Up next is True Detective: Night Country!
True Detective: Night Country
- Release Date: Jan. 14, 2024
- Created by: Issa Lopez
- Cast: Jodie Foster, Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star LaBlanc, John Hawkes, and Christopher Eccleston
As of early 2024, True Detective: Night Country is one of the best TV shows on right now. The series premiered on HBO and MAX on Jan. 14, 2024. There are six episodes in the season, and the season finale is scheduled to air on Sunday, Feb. 18. You have plenty of time to catch up and watch the series live!
True Detective: Night Country is the fourth season of the franchise. It features a whole new cast. There could be some callbacks to the earlier seasons, but this season stands alone and is not connected to the others.
Night Country is set in a remote Alaska town during its dark season when the sun never rises and it's dark all day and night. When a group of scientists go missing and are found dead, two detectives, Chief Liz Danvers (Foster) and Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Reis), try to find out what happen, who is responsible, and how it connects to other crimes in the area.
If you're looking for a new mystery to watch on HBO and Max, you can't go wrong with True Detective: Night Country.
Up next is The Regime!
The Regime
- Release Date: March 3, 2024
- Created by: Will Tracy
- Cast: Kate Winslet, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Martha Plimpton, Guillaume Gallienne, Hugh Grant, and more
The Regime is going to be one of the biggest HBO and MAX shows of the year. Every time Kate Winslet pops up in an HBO show, it's going to be a hit. Winslet recently starred and won awards for her role in Mare of Easttown.
From Will Tracy, The Regime is a political satire. It tells the story of the fall of an authoritarian regime over the course of the year. Winslet stars as the leader of the fictional European country in the middle of turmoil.
There's no doubt The Regime is an ambitious new series. With many of the HBO favorites missing from its 2024 lineup, it's going to be really interesting to see how The Regime is received. This show could easily be the best and biggest show of the year. There are six episodes in the first season of The Regime, which is billed as a limited series. It's likely this will be the only season.
Watch The Regime on HBO and MAX starting on March 4, 2024. The season finale will be released on HBO and MAX on April 7.
The Franchise
- Estimated Release Date: Fall 2024
- Created by: Armando Iannucci, Sam Mendes, and Jon Brown
- Cast: Billy Magnussen, Jessica Hynes, Darren Goldstein, Lolly Adefope, Isaac Cole Powell, Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Bruhl
We're all excited to see House of the Dragon season 2, but The Franchise is my darkhorse contender to be one of the biggest HBO and MAX shows of the year. The series was created by Veep creator Armando Iannucci, legendary director Sam Mendes, and writer and producer Jon Brown.
The series follows the stories of the cast, crew, and creative team of a big-budget superhero film. We don't know a lot about the story, but Variety reported that the series "shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f***-up has an origin story.”
I don't know about you, but that's so exciting! Veep is one of the best TV shows of the last two decades and one of the smartest and funniest comedies of all time. There are so many big names attached to this project. While that doesn't always equal success, The Franchise is set up for that success better than many HBO comedies.
The Franchise has the potential to be a huge winner in future awards shows. Unfortunately, we still don't know the release date for The Franchise yet. We do know it's coming in 2024. The pilot was filmed before the actors' strike started in July 2023, but
The Penguin
- Estimated Release Date: Late 2024
- Created by: Lauren LeFranc
- Cast: Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Michael Zegen, Clancy Brown, Michael Kelly, Rhenzy Feliz, Theo Rossi, Scott Cohen, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O'Connell, Carmen Ejogo, Jared Abrahamson, James Madio, François Chau, David H. Holmes, Craig Walker, and more
The Penguin is coming to HBO and MAX in late 2024, but we still don't know the release date for the new series. HBO's Casey Bloys confirmed the series would arrive in 2024. We can't wait to see this new crime series.
For those who don't know, The Penguin is a spinoff of Matt Reeves' The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / The Batman. Colin Farrell starred as Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin in the film. Following the death of Carmine Falcone, the Penguin becomes a major player in Gotham's underworld.
There's still a lot we don't know about The Penguin, including the story and cast. There are more cast members expected to be in the series. It's unclear if there will be even more tie-ins to world of The Batman, but we'll have to just wait and see. As of right now, it doesn't look like Pattinson will be involved with the project.
We know fans are going to be super excited about this series. I love Colin Farrell, and I don't mind a crime drama, so I'll be tuning in for those reasons.
We'll share more information about The Penguin when we find out! It's definitely going to be an awards season favorite in the future.
Hacks season 3
- Estimated Release Date: Spring 2024
- Created by: Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky
- Cast: Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Paul W. Downs, Kaitlin Olsen, Christopher McDonald, Megan Statler, Lorenza Izzo, Rose Adboo, Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Johnny Sibilly, Mark Indelicato, Ming-Na Wen, Poppy Liu, Joe Mande, Susie Essman, Jane Adams, Luenell, Lauren Weedman, and more
Hacks season 3 is also coming to HBO in 2024. It's been confirmed that the third season of the hit series will premiere sometime in the spring of 2024. HBO and MAX have not confirmed the release date for the new season of the award-winning comedy series. If it's truly coming out this spring, it should be announced soon!
It's been a while since we've seen a new season of Hacks, so this should be great news for fans of the series. The first season premiered in May 2021, followed by season 2 in May 2022. The third season skipped a 2023 release, but it's back in 2024.
After season 1, Hacks won multiple Primetime Emmys, including the award for Outstanding Comedy Series. It was nominated for several Emmys after its second season. Smart won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. I think it's safe to assume Hacks will be in the awards season conversation again after season 3 premieres this spring!
That's the list of the best HBO shows coming in 2024! We'll update the list if HBO announces more big shows later this year.
