True Detective: Night Country episode 2

True Detective: Night Country is off to a strong start, impressing critics and audiences alike with a new mystery taking place in Alaska. Jodie Foster stars as Detective Liz Danvers, a stern stepmom with a serious talent for solving mysteries. But despite her passions and skills, this investigation will definitely prove to be a near-impossible one to crack.

The new season follows the mystery of a group of researchers who went missing, only to turn up frozen in the snow — naked with self-inflicted wounds. A former detective (now trooper) named Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) was convinced from the start that their disappearance had a connection to a murder years ago, and now in episode 2, we know for sure that's true. We won't get into major spoilers here in case you haven't finished the new episode yet, but it's definitely worth the watch.

For now, let's break down all of the songs featured in the second episode of True Detective: Night Country because they were definitely noteworthy!

Episode 2 songs

  • Theme song: “bury a friend” by Billie Eilish
  • “Wannabe” by Spice Girls
  • “I Love You Love You” by Johnny Cash
  • “Pass Them By” by Agnes Obel
  • “Get Down Tonight” by KC and The Sunshine Band and Pat Boone
  • “Seven Devils” by Florence + the Machine

I really love the use of Billie Eilish's "bury a friend" as the opening credits song. It's such a haunting, beautiful, dark track that does a great job depicting the vibe of Ennis, Alaska. Utilizing a woman musician for the theme song is also a great choice given the cast is women-led and the new showrunner, Issa López, is a woman as well. It's a great touch that only enhances the quality of the new season. I also loved "Wannabe" by Spice Girls being featured in this episode as it showed a more playful side of Navarro we had yet to see.

"Seven Devils" by Florence + the Machine was a great way to end the episode, which, of course, ends in another cliffhanger. It's another chilling and beautiful song that makes me feel like I'm caught up in the mystery in Alaska myself!

New episodes of True Detective: Night Country release every Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO and Max. Take a closer look at the full season with the trailer here:
