While we all sit and wait for news on the latest casting decisions for the up coming season of True Detective, names a big name actors are starting to fly around in connection to the lead roles. At this point, we can pretty much assume that the series will lean on female leads in the new season as the only knock on an otherwise stellar first season was it’s criminally underwritten female characters.
This has fans in a frenzy to pair up the perfect female detective duo and it caused Ellen Page and Kate Mara to have some fun with the topic last week. But while the two were joking when they talked about being cast in season two, the question has become would they actually be brilliant casting choices for True Detective?
There is no easy answer to this as we have no idea who will work in the show, the first season pairing of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being a prime example of that. On paper, the two are interesting choices but on film they were brilliant choices.
Both Page and Mara are also under-the-radar enough to be intriguing choices and both are loaded with acting talent — Mara more so than Page. Page is best known for her indie film roles, most notably Juno while Mara has slowly built up a respectable resume that included a major role on House of Cards. Of the two, Mara is the far better option as Page has sort of fallen off as of late, but she could end up surprising us in the end.
There are much better options out there, but we’re surprised by how well season one worked and True Detective has the befit of the doubt at the moment.
