Will True Detective Season 2 really feature female detectives?
By Josh Hill
This upcoming season of True Detective is going to be one of the most anticipated seasons premiers of 2015 but with it will come plenty of attention to who the lead characters end up being. There are rumors that the two lead characters will be female detectives, but there remains some serious doubt as to whether or not this will actually end up being true.
So far, no one has been cast but the names that are being kicked around range form Brad Pitt to Kate Mara and Jessica Chastain.
What people are clinging to though are quotes from series creator Nic Pizzolatto who said the second season would feature strong females characters. But note that he didn’t say ‘lead’ female characters which is something entirely different from what is being interpreted.
The first season lacked strong female characters, that’s a generally accepted fact among fans and critics who watched the season of the series. But having lead characters doesn’t make them strong and is actually a bit insulting to female characters in general. By this logic all female characters who aren’t lead characters are weak and underwritten — which just isn’t true.
By this logic, let’s just eliminate all Best Supporting Actress awards because they’re not the leads so they’re not strong characters.
It’s possible to have strong female characters who aren’t lead characters and while the second season could use front and center female characters, it’s still possible to have strong female characters that aren’t in the lead roles.
