Matthew McConaughey says he only wanted to do one season of True Detecitve
By Josh Hill
There has been few performances as amazing as Matthew McConaughey’s role as Rustin Cohle in True Detective and with the Emmy nominations set to be announced in about a month, the buzz around his legendary performance will once again mount to epic proportions.
We’re already seeing this in the fact that the interview he gave to Deadline is still being picked apart, as his role is still something we can’t stop taling abut or trying to dissect. Part of what made it so amazing is the foresight McConaughey had when approaching the role and the show as a whole.
In McConaughey’s lengthy sit down with Deadline, the actor mentioned that if he had been approached by HBO
"That was always how I saw it. One season, eight episodes, a finite beginning, middle and end, goodbye, look forward to watching it. If HBO had wanted an option on me for a Season 2 or 3, I wouldn’t have done it. I wouldn’t have walked into something where they could say, “We’ve got you for the next three years.”"
Of course, he noted that he’d be open to returning to the series in the future but it won’t be anything long-term like we saw with the first season of the show. But the fact that he knew the importance of just signing on for one season of the show goes to show how smart McConaughey has become about the roles he takes and it further confirms how well constructed the first season of True Detective was.
