How Could Rust Cohle Return to True Detective?

We are all having to deal with there being no True Detective in our lives, but the second season will soon be here faster than we think. While no casting information has been announced officially yet, there have been plenty of rumors to fill us up with some being very much intriguing to consider.

Aside from the question of who will play the lead roles this season, former lead actor Matthew McConaughey spoke last month about possibly returning to the show, or at least being open to reprising the role of Rustin Cohle one more time. That has fans now wondering if McConaughey will be returning in future seasons and in what capacity he possibly could return.

The easiest way for Rust Cohle to return to the series would be to have him in a cameo role. He won’t be a lead character again, but there could be an instance in which the murders he helped solve are referenced and he’s talked to about what he saw and how he can be useful.

That seems like the safest way to return Rust to the series as it’s less tacky than giving him a complete supporting role but is still giving  him a pivotal role to play in the new season.

He could also return in the third season in this capacity as well instead of the second season, which may end up working better as it seems a little less forced. The bottom line is, McConsughey doesn’t need to return to True Detective, but if he does it could be in one of the more memorable cameos we’ve seen in a while.
