It’s not that I’m trying to be a downer here, but as we sit int his depressing void of not having any True Detective in our lives, some of us start to have dangerous thoughts. Chief among these thoughts it the fear that the second season of True Detective will fail to live up to the success of the first season.

  • The first season was an absolute surprise hit and it won over both fans and critics alike at a rapid pace. But thanks to the powerful performances and the shockingly amazing quality of the show, there are many who believe that the second season is staring at a bar that is simply set way too high.

That begs the question of whether or not season two is doomed without even having announced a cast yet.

Logic suggests not, as we can’t judge a book by a cover it doesn’t’ have yet, but that’s not going to stop anyone from making conclusions about the show without there being anything to base that conclusion on. It’s more of a gut feeling that fans are getting as we’ve seen shows come off incredible first season and and then belly flop in season two.

I call it the Phantom Menace Effect, as there was no movie hyped more in the 20th century than 1999’s Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and fans set the bar so high for the film that even if it has been decent it still wouldn’t have cleared expectations.

That might be what True Detective is facing. It’s hard to say a show is doomed to fail before it even announces a cast or a rolls a single frame of film, but expectations are higher than high for True Detective and it will take a lot to clear that bar.
