True Detective will always be remembered for it’s amazing first season and the thing people will be clinging to for years to come is the amazing performance by Matthew McConaughey. But thanks to the True Detective Blu-ray special features packing no punch whatsoever, we are left wondering just what it was like to be on set with McConaughey as he was locked into the role of a lifetime.

In an interview with Collider, Woody Harrelson noted just how deep into character McConaughey went and lauded his ability to sink into everything Rust Cohle was about.

"We have a shorthand, but interestingly, on this project, we didn’t use a lot of our normal kind of shorthand, the way we finish each other’s sentences and shit.  He was an island.  He is one of the most gregarious, awesome guys I know, but in this, he was fully in character and he was very much an island.  It was very different.  And part of that complication helped."

It’s well known that McConaughey’s role in True Detective helped swell his chances of winning a Best Actor Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club that we all knew he was likely to win anyways, but it’s amazing to hear just how locked in he was as Rust Cohle.

We can’t forget that the two roles for McConaughey came back to back, and hearing Harrelson’s praise of his method only further confirms that 2013 and early 2014 was the era of McConaughey.
