George R.R. Martin Is Getting A Second HBO Series
You’d think that finishing up the A Song of Ice and Fire books that compose the backbone for the mega-popular Game of Thrones TV juggernaut would take up all of author George R.R. Martin’s time. And you’d be wrong, apparently.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Martin is working on another series for HBO, one that sounds quite a bit different from what fans have already seen from him. We’re talking about a totally different genre, in fact:
"Martin does have one other previously undisclosed project on his plate, but it’s not one that will take up too much of his time. We can exclusively reveal that the author is developing a new series at HBO called Captain Cosmos. The pitch: “At the dawn of the age of TV in 1949, a visionary young writer creates a science fiction series that tells stories no one else will dare to tell.” The pilot is being written by Michael Cassutt (Z Nation)."
It’s interesting that EW seems confident that Captain Cosmos wouldn’t take up that much of Martin’s schedule. While his day-to-day time spent on Game of Thrones might not be all that consuming at this point, creating a whole new show from whole cloth sounds like it could take a bit more effort.
Throwback science fiction can be a tough sell, even if it’s done well. I’m thinking about things like The Rocketeer here. But with Martin such a hot name right now, maybe he can find success where others have mostly found apathy.
