A new weekend means new programming on HBO. After last week’s quiet HBO schedule, this week offers a good film debut and some original programming. We’re still in between show seasons until The Leftovers begins in the beginning of October, but HBO has some quality programming to fill the gap.

Saturday 9/12

8:15 east – Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb

HBO Description:

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb airs this Saturday on HBO

At the American Museum of Natural History–where the exhibits come to life after dark–director of nighttime operations Ben Stiller discovers the late-evening magic could be in trouble in this third Museum adventure. It’s off to London’s British Museum as Stiller and his late-night compatriots–Attila the Hun, Teddy Roosevelt and Jedediah the miniature cowboy, among them,–encounter a whole new pack of lively relics as they try to solve the mystery and preserve the museum magic. Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Dan Stevens and Ben Kingsley co-star. Produced and directed by Shawn Levy; screenplay by David Guion & Michael Handelman, story by Mark Friedman and David Guion & Michael Handelman, based on characters created by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant. (PG)

The most recent Night at the Museum is one of Robin Williams’ final comedic roles. It’s at a 50% on the Tomatometer, which is surprisingly the highest in the series.

10:00 east – Ferrell Takes the Field

HBO Description:

On an epic single day, comedy superstar Will Ferrell travels to five different spring-training ballparks in Arizona, playing 10 different positions on 10 different major-league teams–all in a heroic effort to raise smiles, and funds for cancer. Produced by Funny or Die in partnership with Major League Baseball, this one-hour special is dedicated to the fight against cancer, with proceeds going to Cancer for College. (TVMA)

Ferrell takes spring training seriously

After plenty of hype, Ferrell Takes the Field finally airs on HBO. Be sure to heed the TVMA rating. This looks like it’s going to be the raunchy version of Ferrell as he plays for 10 different MLB teams.

Sunday 9/13

10:00 east – Project Greenlight (Season Premier)

HBO Description:

Narrowed down from thousands of submissions, thirteen finalists arrive in Los Angeles to meet with the ‘Project Greenlight’ judges – Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, executive Jennifer Todd, producer Marc Joubert, producer Effie Brown, HBO’s Len Amato, and the Farrelly brothers. As the judges discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each contestant’s final project, they also debate the importance of artistic vision versus the collaborative skills required to be a successful director–all leading up to a red-carpet event where the winner will be announced. (TVMA)

10:40 east – Doll and Em (Season Premier)

HBO Description:

Season 2 Premiere. Reunited best friends Dolly Wells and Emily Mortimer sequester themselves in a remote lighthouse, collaborating on a semi-autobiographical script they hope will take Broadway, or at least off-Broadway, by storm. (TV14)

11:05 east – Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

John Oliver returns after his two-week break. HBO never reveals what topic John will tackle before the episode airs, but he’s gotten into the habit of making headlines on Monday morning.
