Scary Double Feature on HBO This Weekend
By Sam Rideout
HBO is adding to their thin horror movie offerings this weekend with a scary double feature. On Saturday starting at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, HBO will run a double feature of two horror flicks that are new to the HBO lineup. The first is The Purge: Anarchy, which is the sequel to the 2013 thriller starring Ethan Hawke. Critical consensus suggests that the sequel is actually superior.
The second film is The Pyramid, which will air directly after The Purge: Anarchy. Adding two new scary movies on Halloween is a good move by HBO. Currently there are only 12 horror movies on HBO Now and HBO Go, and 11 of those 12 are 56% and lower on the Tomatometer. Check out the descriptions of each film below.
Based on critical reception, I would suggest checking out The Purge: Anarchy. It scored much higher with critics compared to The Pyramid. If these two horror movies don’t do it for you, check out the list of the 12 best horror movies that are currently available on HBO Go and HBO Now.
The Purge: Anarchy
HBO Description: It’s “Purge” time again: the one government-sanctioned night every year in which lawlessness–including murder–is permitted. With residents desperately trying to avoid the bloodthirsty hordes, one heavily armed man on a mission of his own becomes the unlikely guardian angel of four innocents. A “satisfyingly creepy, blunt, down-and-dirty thriller” (New York Times). Starring Frank Grillo, Carmen Ejogo, Zach Gilford, Kiele Sanchez and Michael K. Williams. Written and directed by James DeMonaco. (R)
The Pyramid
HBO Description: Archaeologists uncover an incredible new pyramid in the Egyptian desert–and awaken an ancient curse with a bloodlust that knows no bounds. Ashley Hinshaw, Denis O’Hare and James Buckley star in this harrowing horror film. Directed by Gregory Levasseur; written by Daniel Meersand & Nick Simon. (R)
