Westworld season 1, episode 5 synopsis: Contrapasso

It looks like Westworld is about to get even crazier in episode 5, “Contrapasso,” which you’ll see in the official synopsis.

Some shows tout the fact that they have one episode that changes everything. Westworld hasn’t needed that kind of gimmick to keep fans hooked, but it might be getting one anyway.

Even Rachel Wood, who you might know better as Dolores Abernathy, has already gone on record as saying episode 5 is a big one for her character. Other actors and behind the scenes people have said similar things in general.

That feeling only intensified after the preview clip for “Contrapasso” showed what appeared to be a chat between Robert Ford and the Man in Black. Could Westworld’s founder be on a collision course with the obsessed guest who wants to find his way to the center of The Maze?

Let’s see what the official synopsis from HBO tells us:

"A perilous mission awaits Dolores, William and Logan once they arrive in the amoral town of Pariah. Meanwhile, the Man in Black finds an improbable partner in his crusade."

It’s getting increasingly more difficult to tell what is inside or outside of the park’s narrative, especially when it comes to Dolores. Could her mission be her own quest for The Maze, or will she get sucked into whatever William and Logan are up to? It’ll also be interesting to see the scene shift to Pariah since we’ve spent so much time in Sweetwater.

Though she’s not mentioned in the synopsis, we’ll also be watching closely to see what’s up with Maeve Millay. She was part of the dramatic ending to episode 4 and appeared to be on the verge of a major breakthrough in terms of her own awakening.

To put it bluntly, we can’t wait. Make sure to catch “Contrapasso” (which means a suffering opposite to one’s sin, as explained in Dante’s Inferno) on Sunday night at 9 p.m. on HBO, then join us back here at HBO Binge for our recap and more Westworld coverage all season long.
