27. Terry’s PTSD

Terry Bellefleur was the town teddy bear. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body, but the time he spent in Iraq changed him. He saw a lot of bad stuff there, and his demons stayed with him even when he was at his happiest.

Given the show’s run during the height of America’s war in Iraq, having Terry there as a reminder of the horrors of war gave the show a unique perspective about its lasting effects. Terry gave people a look at what war can do to someone, which was a sobering reminder of how many people are impacted by war. Andy frequently mentions how different Terry was when they were growing up, and how different he was after the war.

As the show ended its run, Terry was haunted by memories of war, personified by a smoky demon creature. His fellow soliders were also haunted by this creature with tragic results.

One of the highlights was seeing how gentle Terry was with Arlene and baby Mikey. Mikey was Rene’s son, but Terry loved him like his own. Despite all of the evil he saw, Terry was always a good man.
