16. When Sookie Met Bill

Sookie Stackhouse stands out like a sore thumb in Bon Temps. She’s a good girl, sweet and innocent, but very weird. She can read peoples’ minds and so she is always trying to keep their thoughts out of her head. Meeting vampire Bill Compton changes her life. She can’t read his thoughts, and he’s a gentleman even though he’s a vampire, and vampires are not exactly welcome in mainstream society yet.

He sees in her the purity of an innocent soul, and he wants to protect her from harm. In fact, he saves her life on a few occasions in the early days of their relationship, and this forces him to share his blood with her, binding her to him and making her his. Thus the “Sookie is Mine” saying was born.

Eventually we learn that Bill meeting Sookie was no coincidence, but when he met her he was so drawn to her that he abandoned his mission, ignored his orders, and put himself in a position to protect her at all costs. Even when she shunned him, he was still there watching over her.
