Hear about the stunning final scene of “Trompe L’Oeil” directly from the people in charge of Westworld and the actors involved (no Anthony Hopkins though … :().

Note: This article contains major spoilers for episode 7 of Westworld, “Trompe L’Oeil.” You’re doing yourself a major disservice if you don’t watch it before reading on.

It’s no secret that many Westworld fans have believed for a while that Jeffrey Wright’s character, Bernard Lowe, might be a host. Credit the writers and showrunners, then, for the fact that when that indeed turned out to be the case, the way it went down was still breathtaking.

Call it good television in the age of endless internet and social media speculation. Right down to the end of the climactic discussion between Bernard and Theresa Cullen in the mysterious secondary facility beneath the cottage, there was a growing sense of dread.

When it turned out that Bernard was indeed a creation of Ford’s, one that he had planted among the Westworld employees for his own purposes, it was chilling. And what he did next to Cullen, a woman with whom he’d been sharing a bed for much of the season, was both brutal and a sign of how complete Ford’s control really is.

HBO released a short video clip of Westworld co-creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolanm discussing that scene, as well as quick thoughts from Wright and Sidse Babett Knudsen:

Poor, poor Bernard, indeed. Wright’s comment that “things go astray” is possibly my favorite understatement of the year so far.

Not answered in that video but certainly an open question for the final three episodes of Westworld season 1 is whether or not we’ll keep seeing “Cullen” in host form. Signs certainly point to yes. And maybe if Ford actually has a heart, he’ll let Bernard and Theresa keep seeing each other — but that’s a big “if.”
