From the moment we learned that Jeffrey Dean Morgan had been cast in an unspecified role on The Walking Dead, fans were quick to guess that it would be the comic book villain Negan. It wasn’t just that Negan was the logical role for the veteran actor, but rather that fans could instantly picture the charismatic Morgan portraying the ultimate villain from the comics.
Fans of Morgan’s work as The Comedian in The Watchmen easily made the leap of picturing Morgan in the role of Negan, a character as charming as he was evil. Like The Comedian, Negan has a twisted sense of humor, and Morgan admits to loving bringing Negan to life despite the horrific acts the character commits on screen. Like beating people to death with a baseball bat. Or tossing them into a furnace.
Morgan is not stranger to television, with stints on Grey’s Anatomy and Supernatural, but hasn’t ever appeared to be having this much fun in any role to date. Always bringing a manic energy that never seems to quite go over the top, Morgan’s depiction of the character has brought The Walking Dead, back to life. Sorry for the terrible pun.
