Czernobog / Old Gods

The Starz promo characterize Czernobog, played by Peter Stormare, as the God of Evil. Slavic mythology, from which he hails, more specifically names him as the black god. Not much is known about Czernobog’s role in Slavic culture, but most historians agree that, in very simple terms, Slavic mythology attributes bad things to Czernobog and good things to his counterpart, Beloblog, the white god. Shadow meets Czernobog in Chicago, where he resides with the Zorya Sisters.

The Zorya Sisters / Old Gods

Also brought to America by Slavs, the Zorya sisters represent the Morning Star, the Evening Star and the Midnight Star in Slavic mythology. They are guardian goddesses who watch over the “doomsday hound.” In the novel, they live with Czernobog in Chicago.

Mad Sweeney / Old Gods

No surprises here: “The Leprechaun,” played by Pablo Schreiber, was brought to America by the Irish. While Gaiman never explicitly elaborates on his background, working fan theory is that he is based on Suibhne mac Colmain, “a king cursed with madness and wandering,” who derives his power from his insanity.
