Yes, that was the Perfect Strangers theme song on The Leftovers
By Josh Hill
This week’s episode of The Leftovers was titled ‘Perfect Strangers’, which made it the perfect opportunity to use the classic 80s theme song.
Over the first two seasons of The Leftovers, the show wasn’t really sure what it was. In what has been confirmed to be its final season, the series seems to have finally gotten some footing and in the process is playing with house money in ways other shows might not be able to get away with.
Case in point: tonight’s episode — titled ‘Perfect Strangers’ — started with the theme song from the cult hit 80s series Perfect Strangers.
It takes a certain amount of guts to pull that off, and who would have guess The Leftovers would be the show to do it. Just in case you’re not familiar with the theme song, here it is:
Majestic doesn’t even begin to describe the thought process behind this. Fans of the show took to Twitter to whole heartedly agree:
This is the type of viral moment that has eluded The Leftovers over most of its entire run. Unlike other shows like Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, the following has never been as broad for The Leftovers but it’s been loyal.
While this moment was certainly a hit on social media, thus upping the profile of the show, it’s not as though this will be a moment that defines its legacy. Instead, it could turn people onto a show that has been great for two seasons and help introduce more eyes to a show that far too few people have been enjoying.
