We know Shadow’s ill-fated wife Laura (Emily Browning) dies. It’s no spoiler; she’s literally introduced as The Dead Wife. Her death is the catalyst for Shadow’s journey with Mr. Wednesday and her ultimately undead state is a defining feature of her character. She 100 percent dies, but whether she 100 percent dies in the season premiere is another question.

The adventure really can’t begin until Shadow learns of Laura’s death, but with any universe-building effort, American Gods has a lot of work to do before they actually need the adventure to begin. Meaning, the premiere could leave Shadow in prison while introducing Mr. Wednesday and the other gods, doing their thing, elsewhere in America. There could be quite a bit of set-up and scene-setting before anything actually happens.

It’s easy to see the show ending the first episode with Shadow’s release – a week early due to Laura’s death – which still technically puts her death in the premiere. Then again, the Starz adaptation is expected to draw out the events of Gaiman’s novel, so it’s not out of the question that Laura survives the pilot.
