Well, that was interesting, to say the least.

Tonight’s beautiful premiere of American Gods “The Bone Orchard” on Starz was a serious mind-trip that could only be conceived from the mind of Bryan Fuller, so we took a crack at making some predictions of what’s to come in next week’s episode “The Secret of Spoons”.

1. Shadow Moon is a “chosen one”.

Meaning that Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) isn’t just some random convict. There’s a reason why he was chosen by Mr. Wednesday to be his right-hand man/bodyguard. We are thinking that it has something to do with Shadow’s past, which was seldom brought up in tonight’s premiere.

We know that his mother was a hippie (hence the name Shadow Moon), but what if she had some sort of connection with the gods: devout worshiping, blood sacrifices, you name it, that destined Shadow to get caught up in the war between the old gods and the new as an adult?

2. Shadow Moon’s dreams are indications of what’s to come.

Throughout this episode, we were shown a few of Shadow Moon’s trippy dreams. We know through the first one, the vision of his wife through the broken prison wall, that these dreams might be predicting the future since, right after the dream, Shadow finds out that his wife was killed in a car accident.

The other dreams are a bit more convoluted: they are all set in a forest, one has tree branches like hands reaching to out grab him, another we see a buffalo coming towards him from behind a large tree with fiery eyes in, what I’m guessing, is the bone orchard.

So what do these dreams mean? Well, the bone orchard it’s self could possibly symbolize the state of America after the war between the gods with humans being the ultimate casualty. Trees often symbolize life, growth, and rebirth, but this tree seems dead, again not a good sign.

And the flaming buffalo could be a representation of America going up in flames since it is one of the few iconic animals of the country. So, all in all, Shadow’s dreams seem to be indicating a bleak future for America if the gods go to war.
