Here are five things we learned from the House of Cards season 5 trailer from Netflix.
The first trailer for Netflix’s fifth season of the highly addictive House of Cards has finally arrived, and it’s everything we expected it to be: dramatic, sleek, sexy, creepy and a little too close to home when it comes to American politics.
We are breaking down the five things we learned from the new trailer and making guesses about what’s to come when Netflix drops the show on May 30.
5. Democracy is in trouble
“The American people don’t know what’s best for them,” says Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), who’s sounding more like a totalitarian dictator than someone running for their second term of President of the United States. It’s clear from the trailer that Frank wants to create a new America, one that he can easily control considering he thinks the people are “children”. But how is Frank going to achieve this? It sounds like he’s convincing his wife Claire (Robin Wright) that the American people need the Underwoods even though they’re carrying “Never Underwood” signs throughout the trailer.
One of the biggest questions this trailer brings up: is House of Cards veering away from the normal and going dystopian?
4. Someone is going to die
One of the most interesting scenes from the trailer is thirty seconds in. We see Frank and Claire sitting in a church. Claire is sobbing, while Frank looks on at competition Will Conway (Joel Kinnaman) sitting on the other side of the aisle. Everyone is wearing black and it looks a lot like a funeral. The only question is who’s? Who would die and require the attendance of both candidates in the middle of their campaigns?
One of the biggest questions is why does it upset Claire so much to the point of tears? Or is she just putting up a front? Because Claire is normally a rock, and we never see her cry.
