After a short teaser yesterday, Netflix has officially dropped the full trailer for Marvel’s The Defenders.
Debuting on August 18, the Marvel miniseries — The Defenders — starring Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter, Finn Jones, and Charlie Cox is shaping up to be the noir team-up of the New York City heroes. Each of the heroes gets their fair share of screen time in two and half minute clip as well as a small glimpse into how the four will come together.
Jessica Jones looks like she’s going to find herself on the wrong side of the law in Harlem. The opening scene of the trailer has her in an interrogation room where Luke Cage‘s Misty Knight is angrily berating her for interfering with an investigation.
Considering Luke has become Harlem’s Hero, it’s more than likely that she was trying to find a way to help him. Luckily for Jessica, a confident Matt Murdock strolls in as her defense attorney, officially setting up the first meeting of our two Defenders. Was anyone else a little surprised that Jeri Hogarth wasn’t the one barging into that room to defend Jessica? It seems like a missed opportunity to explore their fragile relationship after the fallout from the first season of Jessica Jones.

Iron Fist may not have been nearly as compelling or ambitious as the other Marvel series, Danny Rand is an integral part of The Defenders. Comic book fans will rejoice to finally see the “Power Man and Iron Fist,” friendship develop on-screen, although their first meeting isn’t very heartwarming.
Danny attempts to take down a suspicious figure which ultimately leads to a brawl between him and Luke. Claire attempts to unite the two burgeoning heroes with a heartfelt, “You’re on the same side!”.

Matt Murdock gets the least amount of screen time in the trailer but he is undoubtedly going to be a major factor in The Defenders. His mentor, Stick (a terrific Scott Glenn), has ties to The Hand or the nefarious group who are shaping up to be the main villains of the entry.
His banter with Jessica Jones in the trailer gives us a glimpse of the partnership that will form between the two of them as the most broken of the group. After watching the woman he loved die, Murdock will be in for a rude awakening when Elektra finally makes her debut as alive and well. Yesterday’s teaser was so short that it was unclear which side she would be fighting for but the trailer answers that question. During a fight scene, Elektra can be seen throwing Matt through a glass wall (or window?) and also shattering the already fragile hero’s heart.

The heroes aren’t the only focus in The Defenders trailer, with Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious villain making her debut. With some association with the nefarious organization, The Hand, it seems like she is intent on taking down the four by using their personal connections. Considering Jessica’s sister Trish has also gotten focus in some of the previous teasers, it seems like she and Elektra will be too easy targets to hurt. Although with confirmed appearances by Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, the Meachum siblings, Colleen Wing, Malcolm, and Misty Knight, anyone is fair game in the war for New York City.
