5. The Reign of Maegor the Cruel

As the saying goes in the novels by George R.R. Martin, when a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin regarding whether said Targaryen will be bug nuts insane. We might have paraphrased there, but you get the point. Whatever side of the coin was bug nuts insane, that’s the side it landed on for Maegor the Cruel.

Born roughly three hundred years before the current saga, Maegor was the second son of the original Targaryen badass, Aegon the Conqueror. It was Aegon that conquered the Seven Kingdoms, but Maegor that truly helped establish the Targaryen dynasty that we all know and love. Or at least, tolerate. Maegor completed the Red Keep with its interior keep Maegor’s holdfast, built the Dragonpit (a stable for the House Targaryen dragons), and many of the other hallmarks of the Targaryens.

Now that all sounds well and good, but Maegor accomplished all of these feats through blood. Maegor murdered all the laborers who built the Red Keep to protect its secret passages, and built the Dragonpit on top of a Great Sept he burned to the ground with his dragon. See what we mean?

If that wasn’t enough, Maegor was married six different times and executed more than a few of them for not bearing him an heir. It was later revealed that one wife, Tyanna, was poisoning the others to avoid them birthing an heir. We won’t tell you what happened to her. There are children present.

Ultimately, the series would provide a different pace from the current saga as we’d watch a king we all despise slowly drift into madness, and the Seven Kingdoms struggle to survive under his reign. Dragons, betrayals, and rebellions would provide no shortage of action. Bring on Maegor the Cruel.
