40. Maryland — The High Sparrow
The High Sparrow arrived on the scene quietly during season 5, but it did not take long for the crafty and cunning religious monarch to establish his power in King’s Landing. Despite Maryland’s seemingly small stature (being one of the smallest states by geographic region), it is nonetheless one of the United States most densely populated states. Maryland also annually ranks at the top or near the top of average income, another reason not to count out Maryland.
Maryland has also earned the nickname “America in Miniature” from its varied topography, possessing every type of habitat imaginable. That’s certainly something the High Sparrow, a man who claims to represent the people could appreciate. If economics and geography aren’t your cup of tea, ponder that Maryland is considered by many to be the birthplace American religious freedom. Granted the High Sparrow is all about religious persecution as opposed to freedom, but the two seem to go hand and hand more than we like to admit.
Lastly, the official seal of Maryland, has on one side a charging knight on a horse (the state’s founder Lord Baltimore), while on the reverse features a plowman and a fisherman. Sounds a bit like the Warrior, the Father and the Mother that the High Sparrow is always droning on about if you ask us.
