39. Nevada — Oberyn Martell
Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne. A renowned warrior with a temper to match, few characters had as much impact as Oberyn in his single season on the show. With Oberyn’s home kingdom of Dorne largely consisting of desserts and mountains, a United State with the same characteristics seemed like a natural fit. But more than just deserts and mountains were needed. Enter Nevada.
When we first meet the Red Viper, Oberyn is enjoying one of many brothels in King’s Landing. And which state is the only state in the union where prostitution is legal? That’s right, Nevada. Oberyn would certainly approve. Oberyn was a man who enjoyed life’s pleasures, and surely would have fit right in strolling down the Las Vegas strip. Lenient laws on gambling, marriage, and of course prostitution like those in Nevada seem likely policies should Oberyn have ever been given the chance to run a state, or kingdom.
It doesn’t stop there, however. Nevada’s unofficial state nickname is the “Battle Born State.” Now does that sound like a place the Red Viper of Dorne, a man who enjoyed violence as much as anything else would have liked to call home? We certainly think so, and that’s why Oberyn Martell best represents the state of Nevada.
