35. Washington — Yara Greyjoy

Yara Greyjoy, the only daughter of Balon Greyjoy, twice king of the Iron Islands. After the deaths of two of her brothers, and Theon being shipped off to House Stark, Yara was Balon’s chosen right hand. Despite women not typically holding positions of leadership on the Iron Islands, Yara rose to great heights among her people before being run off by her uncle Euron. A master sailor and warrior, Yara is fierce, loyal, and cunning. Just like the state of Washington.

Initially, Washington might not appear to be much of a match for Yara’s homeland, the Iron Islands. And yet, Washington has miles of coastline, as well as the Puget Sound, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. The Puget Sound is filled with islands, fjords, and bays, which, excuse the pun, sounds an awful lot like the Iron Islands.

The Pacific Ocean is more than a geographic part of the state, it forms the core of the state’s identity. Shipbuilding and fishing form the backbone of the state’s economy, both of which are at the heart of Yara Greyjoy’s personality as well. Washington appeals to the warrior in Yara as well, as the state is one of the U.S.’s primary manufacturers of missiles and aircraft. Not exactly Game of Thrones era weapons, but weapons nonetheless. Yara Greyjoy would represent Washington quite well.
