33. South Carolina — Jojen Reed

Jojen Reed, the younger brother of Meera Reed, was first introduced to Thrones fans during its third seasons. Physically on the weaker side, Jojen was strong of heart and mind, and always pushing his companions Bran Stark, Hodor, and Meera further in their journey. No matter the obstacles, Jojen never faltered in his belief in the mission to get Bran north of the Wall to the Three-Eyed Raven. Ultimately willing to sacrifice himself for the cause, Jojen inspired hope and faith in all around him. Thus Jojen would naturally represent a state built on the same principles, and South Carolina is exactly that.

South Carolina has two official state mottos, both the embodiment of Jojen Reed. The first, “While I Breathe I Hope,” aptly describes Jojen’s never say die spirit. Jojen’s unwavering commitment to ferrying Bran Stark to the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven was a key component to the group’s success in the perilous journey north of the Wall. Likewise, Jojen embodied South Carolina’s other official motto, “Prepared in Mind and Resources.” Jojen, while not a mighty warrior or capable hunter, was nonetheless a valuable member of his group, bringing knowledge and foresight through his greensight ability.

Jojen Reed hails from the swampy marshlands of the Neck, topography shared by South Carolina with its salt marshes and bogs. Greywater Watch, Jojen’s family keep is unique in Westeros for its habit of moving, never staying in one place. Much the same as the tidal islands of South Carolina that shift from location to location based on ocean currents, Greywater Watch’s location is always changing. Even Jojen Reed’s ancestral home represents South Carolina.
