31. Colorado — Lysa Arryn
Lysa Arryn, or “crazy Aunt Lysa”, was the sister of Catelyn Stark and therefore the aunt to all of the Stark children. As Catelyn, and eventually, Sansa would learn, however, Lysa was not exactly what one would consider emotionally stable. And while we don’t mean to imply that Colorado, the state that Lysa represents in our countdown, she does share many similarities with the “Rocky Mountain State.”
Foremost among those similarities are the shared geographical features of both Colorado and the Vale, the kingdom over which Lysa held dominion over until her untimely (or timely if you’re Sansa) death. Like the Vale, Colorado is more than just the mountains that are the two’s dominant feature. There are rivers, meadows, and valleys aplenty. Colorado even has a trout as a state fish, the sigil of her birth house, House Tully.
Lysa’s fear of the Lannister’s and her desire to protect her son Robyn drove Lysa to seek refuge in the Eyrie, a castle atop of the tallest peak in the Vale. Colorado has a similar structure that would have been much to Lysa’s liking; Cheyenne Mountain. Cheyenne Mountain is a U.S. military installation built under a mountain and is said to be safe even against a nuclear blast. Take that Lannisters. If that wasn’t enough for crazy aunt Lysa, one of the highest peaks in Colorado is named, Castle Peak. Match made in heaven.
