27. Kansas — Daario Naharis

Daario Naharis, the fierce and skilled warrior that rose from slavery and the fighting pits to command his own company of sellswords. Daario would of course ultimately find himself as an adviser and lover to Daenerys Targaryen (before being unceremoniously dumped). What might our roguish mercenary captain have in common with that state of Kansas? The sunflower state?

Kansas’ entry into the United States, its very heritage, is unique among the states in our Union. When it was opened for settlement in the mid-1800’s, abolitionist and pro-slavery settlers flooded into the state in an attempt to bring Kansas into the Union as either a pro or anti slavery state. This led to years of violence between the two sides before the abolitionists emerged victorious Which to our Game of Thrones-centric ears sounds a lot like the battle for Meereen between Dany’s forces  (abolitionists) and the slavers minus the whole dragons thing. Daario was a principal leader of that fight as a former slave himself, thus would represent “Bleeding Kansas” quite well.

If you want to get more literal, consider the state’s official motto “To the stars through difficulties.” As it relates to Daario’s life, ponder that Daario rose from a slave in the fighting pits, to become a chief confidant and consort of the Mother of Dragons. To the stars indeed.
