12. Oregon — Catelyn Stark
Catelyn Stark, the matriarch of House Stark. After her husband Ned’s death, Catelyn became one of the primary standard-bearers for her house, alongside her son King Robb. Abnormally influential for a woman in the culture of Game of Thrones, Catelyn was above else zealously devoted to her children. Catelyn was not always a Stark however, she was born a Tully of the Riverlands. And there is one state that perfectly blends her joint heritage; Oregon.
Oregon is located in the northwest of the United States, much like Catelyn’s future home in the Kingdom of the North. Catelyn’s birth home in the Riverlands, is as it sounds, abundant in rivers just as Oregon is. Two of Oregon’s three borders are formed by rivers (the Columbia and Snake Rivers), while a third is bordered by an ocean, again just as the Riverlands.
And then there is the official state motto, “She flies with her own wings.” If there is a more apt motto for a Game of Thrones characters among the states, we have yet to discover. Throughout the series, whether it was freeing Jaime Lannister against her son’s orders, or taking Tyrion Lannister captive, Catelyn always flew with her own wings. Catelyn Stark is Oregon.
