10. Wisconsin — Davos Seaworth
Ser Davos Seaworth began his life as a smuggler before an encounter with Stannis Baratheon would earn him his knighthood. Rising alongside Stannis, Davos would find himself in service of Jon Snow. Regardless of whom he serves, Davos has always provided sound advice as well as a never say die attitude that more than once pulled his chosen master out of the mouth of defeat. As one of the show’s few pure characters, it was not lightly that we chose Wisconsin for Davos to represent.
Although there are geographic factors that would appeal to Davos, namely Wisconsin’s proximity to the Great Lakes, other attributes would be more appealing to the “Onion Knight.” The Great Seal of Wisconsin is where we will find most of the similarities between the State and Davos however. There are the ties to navigation and shipping in the form of a sailor and an anchor both appearing on the seal, and both appealing to Davos’ background as a sailor and smuggler.
The two mottoes that appear on the Seal are personal mottoes of Ser Davos as well. “Forward,” the state motto of Wisconsin is something Davos is ever repeating in different forms every time his leader is knocked down. Jon Snow and Stannis both received a famous Davos pep talk.
The second motto, that of the United States itself, E Pluribus Unum is is a newer acquisition of Davos, one he’s taken up alongside the fight against the White Walkers. It means, “Out of many, one.” Davos has been preaching unification in the face of the White Walker threat more than any other character on the show. Davos Seaworth, we name you scion of Wisconsin.
