Investigating The Saint of Killers

In Episode 5, the stepdaughter of Tulip watched her father die and agreed to lead The Saint of Killers to Jesse Custer. She took the Saint of Killers to Dennis’ apartments and then pointed the Saint to the wrong apartment before escaping with her life. The Saint of Killers then began to kill everyone in the building before he made his way to Dennis’ apartment. Because he made so much noise, Jesse was able to hear him coming and he escaped with Tulip and Cassidy.

The three chose to go to the library to learn what they could about The Saint of Killers. While Cassidy used a viewfinder and comics (which included actual panels from the Preacher comic book series), Jesse read books and took notes and Tulip listened to a book on tape called American Psychopaths (The Saint of Killers was Chapter 57. Chapter 58 was about Dick Cheney). It was the book on tape that replayed the story of how The Saint of Killers became who he was, omitting the part about the town causing his pain.

That is when the three tried to figure out how to stop him and what his weaknesses could be. Just then, Cassidy called Dennis to warn him to get out but it was too late. The Saint of Killers was waiting and Jesse used The Voice to stop him from killing Dennis.

A Sudden Glance at Jesse’s Past

There has been no mention of Jesse Custer’s “gramma” outside of a look at a coffin in a fish tank when Jesse said his mother’s family was from Louisiana. However, there was hints given out here and it was another chance for Preacher to move away from the comics. In the comics, Gramma was a very vengeful woman who forced Jesse into the ministry, which was not what happened on the TV show.

So, what were they planning on changing this to?

Jesse realized what it was The Saint of Killers needed and went to a shop in Louisiana, telling the proprietor that his name was Jesse L’Angell (his mom’s maiden name) and got in to talk. Apparently, in the TV world of Preacher, the L’Angell family dealt in selling souls and there were a lot of stores around Louisiana that dealt in the souls. However, they were all put under thanks to a large Asian company who is selling souls now. That is what the entire opening was about. This company buys a percent of someone’s soul and then sells it to someone else to heal them.

Jesse is going to try to find a soul to give The Saint of Killers, to help him get into Heaven.
