Ordinarily, Varys wouldn’t even be in our top twenty-five, let alone our top five. The Spider is a wildly adept operator within the game of thrones, one who’s cunning has very few equals. Between his own instincts and his vast network of spies, very little gets by Varys. So what could possibly threaten the former Master of Whispers?

Last week, upon the arrival of Jon Snow on Dragonstone, Varys confronted Melisandre regarding her intentions. On a high cliff overlooking Jon’s arrival, Varys interrogated Melisandre rather strenuously and suggested the Red Woman never return to Westeros after she revealed her plan to sail for Essos. The interrogation back fired, however, and Melisandre revealed that Varys would die in Westeros, just like she would.

Now, Melisandre has gotten prophecies wrong before, and could even mean something as benign as Varys dying of old age, but the Red Woman left a bad taste in our mouth with this particular prophecy. We believe Varys still has a role to play in sitting Daenerys on the Iron Throne, but stranger things have happened. We are officially scared for the Spider.
