24. Gilly finds a very important letter

At Oldtown, Sam is tired with all of the work he has to do. He’s doing some of his work with Gilly, who’s reading out facts from one of the books Sam has. While she’s listing everything this Maester recorded – she finds something very important. Only it was barely acknowledged in the episode.

Gilly tells Samwell the High Septon issued an annulment for “Prince Ragger (Rhaegar)” so that he could marry another woman in Dorne. This is most likely Lyanna Mormont and has to do with Jon Snow. If Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, and the marriage is legal, that gives him a better right to the throne than even Daenerys.

This small bit of information is incredibly important, but it was never developed further as Sam decided to leave Oldtown. Tired of the rules and inscribing other people’s work, he leaves Oldtown, trying to make his old adventures instead about reading about other people’s adventures.

Even though this is a great step for Sam, I can’t help but think that if he listened to Gilly, the season would be completely different. Hopefully, it’s reintroduced in the season finale.
