Jesus gets dirty

There are three dirty little secrets in this episode of Preacher, and the first one took place in the cold opening. A man and a woman were in bed together having sex when the man believed he heard something outside. The woman let him know not to worry because her husband would not return until the weekend. The two then had athletic sex, with crazy positions displayed in shadows on the wall of the room. Just when we were trying to figure out who these people were and what they had to do with Preacher, they finished and the man said he had to leave.

After telling the woman that he loved her, he told her that she could tell no one about this. The man was Jesus Christ, and this sexual act happened right before the Crucifixion. His disciples show up and say they thought he was praying on the mount and he said he came to bless this sick woman. One of the disciples realized what happened and told her that he would keep the secret after Jesus left.

Later, the woman had a baby. When she asked to hold it, a woman beat her to death, and the lineage of Jesus Christ began. For anyone who never read the Preacher comics, this might have been the biggest shock of the entire TV series.

Herr Starr and Jesse Custer

Following up from last week’s meeting between Jesse Custer and Herr Starr, the two spoke at the bar, and after Jesse used violence and Genesis, he realized Herr Starr had no idea where God was. However, Starr took Jesse to his office where The Pope and The Archbishop of Canterbury were waiting. When Jesse asked where God was, the Archbishop said that he was on the run when the Seraphim angels rose up against him. The Pope said that man had failed God and that he was not creating a new species, 10-feet tall with the prowess of a lion, flight of an eagle, and the honey badger’s sense of smell.

Jesse realizes immediately that no one knows where God is but one of the men spoke of “this child.” That is when Jesse ordered Herr Starr to take him to “the child.” When they arrive, Jesse learns that this child is the 25th grandson of Jesus Christ – The Messiah Humperdoo – and he believes that he might know where God is. Sadly, the bloodline of God was kept pure through inbreeding, and the child is mentally and physically disabled. He pees on Jesse, showing he likes him. When Jesse uses Genesis and asks where God is, the Humperdoo simply cries out in pain.

One note from this scene. The Messiah was drawing in a book, and all the drawings were of an oversized dog – the same man in a dog costume that Jesse was taken to see when he first arrived in New Orleans and asked to see God.

This section ends with Herr Starr offering a deal to Jesse. He says that no one knows where God is but there is a better alternative. Herr Starr says that the apocalypse is coming and no one wants to see Humperdoo as the new Messiah. However, Starr then asks Jesse why they should find God when Jesse can use his power and become God. Jesse calls this blasphemy but looks conflicted.

Tulip and Featherstone

Tulip is still having nightmares, and it is clear that she doesn’t believe that Jesse Custer sent the Saint of Killers to Hell. That brings in Agent Featherstone as Lara. The two seem to bond some but soon Featherstone slips up about Tulip being a bank robber in Dallas, and that almost does her in. Luckily, she convinces Hoover to pretend to be her abusive drunk ex-boyfriend, and they win over Tulip again when the two beat Hoover up.

By the time Featherstone leaves, she has Tulip convinced that she can’t trust Jesse and points out a rickety floorboard in the bathroom. When Tulip tries to fix the floorboard, she finds the guns and sword of the Saint of Killers that Jesse hid and is ready to confront Jesse by the end of the episode. It is clear that Featherstone and Herr Starr have plans to turn Tulip against Jesse to split up the group.

Cassidy and Denis

In what might be the most tragic storyline of this season, Cassidy finally found the love of his son Denis by turning him into a vampire to save his life. They even have hookers over to celebrate. However, Denis is unable to control his bloodlust, and the two women barely escape with their lives. In the end, when Jesse is talking to Herr Starr outside, Denis arrives back home with blood all over his mouth.
