The Game of Thrones season 7 finale ended with a heck of a cliffhanger regarding Tormund and Beric’s fate.

During the 80-minute Game of Thrones season 7 finale, many storylines were brought to fruition: From the great peace accord at the dragon pit in King’s Landing to Littlefinger’s demise at Winterfell. From Jon and Dany’s not-so-epic boat sex to Sam and Bran figuring out Jon’s true and legitimate heritage played across one of Bran’s weirwood.net YouTube videos of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark’s wedding. And, finally, the Night King’s army of the dead crossing into the realm of the living with an assist from Viserizombie.

When that happened, the fate of two of our favorite Game of Thrones characters — Tormund Giantsbane and Beric Dondarrion — was left unanswered. Actor Kristofer Hivju (Tormund) spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about what might have happened.

Hivju kicks things off with the fact that not even he knows what happened to Tormund and Beric.

"Realistically speaking, if you’re on top of an ice wall and it’s many hundreds of meters tall … I was a competitive climber when I was younger, and that fall, I must say, it doesn’t look good, man. (Laughs.) It really doesn’t look good. I saw an Instagram post somewhere of a guy shoveling through the snow and screaming, “Tormund! Tormund!” (Big laugh.)"

Oh, that meme has made the rounds throughout the internet, as it accurately sums up practically every Game of Thrones fan’s level of anxiety, when the episode faded to black and the credits began to roll.

While even Hivju himself has no clue if Tormund and Beric died or not atop the Wall at Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, one thing is for sure, we fans will have a long, long wait until season 8 to find that out. Until then, we’ll just refer to him as Schrödinger’s Tormund.
