18. The Simpsons “The Treehouse of Horror V”

What sets The Simpsons apart from other animated series is that it was originally a smart commentary on current events/mainstream culture. “Treehouse of Horror V,” was especially memorable as one of the most boundary pushing Halloween episodes of television. In fact, this was because David Mirkin was contact by a disappointed Congress who wanted censorship for the amount of violence in the series. At the time, this episode was considered one of the most disturbing but fun hour of holiday fun that it shocked many viewers. While almost every “Treehouse of Horror,” segment is entertaining, it was number five that stood out due to its jaw dropping material.

For starters, one part is a hilarious riff on The Shining. Without beer or television, Homer ends up going crazy and hunts down his family members. He does manage to kill Willie, but thankfully Lisa finds an abandoned television in the snow which satisfies her father’s urges. This is definitely the best segment of the night but the other two are pretty close. The second one deals with Homer travelling back in time where his tiny mistakes change the future wildly. It’s entertaining to see all of the effects but eventually, things go back to being semi-normal (minus humans with lizard tongues), that he gives up trying to fix things. Finally, Bart and Lisa deal with a principal who wants  to eat children in order to empty out the detention hall. This has the darkest ending of them all with the kids meeting their untimely demise in a shocking conclusion.
