14. Buffy the Vampire Slayer – “Hush”

“Hush” isn’t technically a Halloween episode but it’s so terrifying that it makes for a perfect viewing on the holiday. Buffy the Vampire Slayer became famous for Joss Whedon’s fast and quippy dialogue but he eventually wanted to prove the show was more than that. In “Hush,” he ends up taking most of the dialogue out and performing the episode without it. The truly scary villains, “The Gentlemen,” roll into town and steal everyone’s voices so they can easily access people’s houses without screams disrupting them. One of the evil demons is played by the legendary Doug Jones, who would go on to play an infamous villain in Pan’s Labyrinth and soon the Nosferatu remake. Buffy and co. are expected to fight an evil force when they can’t speak which leads to a bit of difficulty along the way. While the titular hero is eventually able to stop them with the help of love interest Riley.

However the big plot movement for fans would be the introduction of Tara. The fan favorite witch would go on to join the Scooby Gang as well as date Willow. In “Hush,” she is simply a witch who meets up with Willow and the two face off against the “Gentlemen”. Meanwhile Xander proves how much he cares about Anya when they lose their voices because he’s unable to articulate his feelings with his words. Their relationship problems are hilariously commented on by a tied up Spike, who was the easy MVP throughout the later seasons as the snarky antihero.
