11. American Horror Story – “Halloween”

“Halloween” is a two part episode of American Horror Story that debuted in the first season in the “Murder House,” arc. It brings up a lot of interesting questions but at the forefront: is Tate Langdon a sympathetic character? It’s revealed in the episode that he’s actually a ghost and everyone Halloween he’s haunted by the students he senselessly murdered. Did the house turn him crazy or was he always like that? Violet get her first peak at the deranged sociopath who gunned down a school compared to the loving albeit creepy boyfriend she’s always known. Evan Peters perfectly captures the complicated role of such an equally sad but evil character.

All of the characters go through the ringer in this episode, with the ghosts coming back to haunt everyone. Ben faces off against an angry Hayden who eventually reveals her pregnancy to Vivian. This leads to him justifiably getting kicked out of the house. Meanwhile, Addie gets all dressed up for the holiday as a “pretty girl” thanks to Violet and goes trick-or-treating. Unfortunately, the poor girl is hit by a car and killed which absolutely destroys Constance. All-in-all the two episodes are probably two of the best in the mini-series franchise. American Horror Story has never quite hit the highs that Murder House rose to band this two-parter is wildly entertaining and thrilling.
