6. Modern Family – Halloween”

Modern Family has been the reigning king of comedy ever since it debuted in 2009 which makes it unsurprising that “Halloween” would make this list. Considered one of the best episodes of the series, it was nominated (and won) multiple Emmy awards for this hour of television. Highlighting all the eccentricities of the cast, this episode was a slam dunk on almost every storyline. However, Claire having her meltdown at the failed haunted house did a lot to soften a normally neurotic character. Seeing her desperation to keep one holiday tradition now that her expanding family has encroached on the others, Claire ends up losing it in the middle of their haunted house spectacle. The typically supportive Phil didn’t notice how high strung his wife had become until too late because his neighbors’ divorce had him spiraling down his own hole.

However, Sofia Vergara takes the cake for best storyline in the episode because she gets to flex her comedic muscles. Typically she gets a lot of the same jokes to run through: how different Colombia is to America. This time it’s simply about her pronunciation and there are a few delightful gags but specifically one where she asks Jay’s assistant to order him “baby cheeses” but he instead gets a box full of “baby Jesuses”. When he brings up the mistake, she gets the opportunity to do a hilarious American accent that throws off the entire family but makes it a hoot for viewers who get to watch the scenes unfold.
