23. Speechless – “H-A-L– HALLOWEEN”

Speechless had an excellent freshman run last year and its Halloween episode was a delightful time. For starters, it follows JJ’s first high school party experience which is as complicated as one could imagine. Just because he has cerebral palsy, doesn’t mean that he just stops wanting to do typical teenager activities. Unfortunately, that means bailing on his dad’s planned holiday night in favor of attending his first party. Slipping past Kenneth, his friends are able to slip him a few beers until he ends up getting drunk under the radar. While Kenneth initially tries to pass him off as tired, Maya immediately picks up on her son’s current state of mind. Maya and Jimmy are ecstatic that they get to ground their son for such a mundane teenage experience which is such a heartwarming moment for the couple. It’s topped by Kenneth telling a sleeping JJ that it’s his job to protect him from things like this but he does hope that sometimes the young guy wins a few rebellious moments once in a while.

Meanwhile, Ray and Dylan team up for a successful planning committee. They prepare the best haunted house that the school has ever seen but Ray ultimately getting his heart broken anyways. It’s always nice to see these two siblings work together rather than actively try to sabotage the other. Not to mention, an episode that features family Halloween costumes centered around a wheel chair (JJ is a DeLorean) is bound to be a fun hour.
