22. M*A*S*H – “Trick or Treatment”

There’s a reason M*A*S*H is considered one of the best television shows of all time: it’s well-written and well-acted. So it’s unsurprising that their Halloween episodes “Trick or Treatment,” made this Top Thirty list. It’s the 4077th Annual Halloween Party but things don’t go exactly as planned when a group of wounded soldiers showed up. However, dressed in costume the group does their best to help out despite the circumstances. To pass the time and keep the moral up, the doctors begin swapping ghost stories in the OR even though the amount of injured people keeps rising.

Unlike most of the shows on this list, M*A*S*H isn’t a laughing matter. “Trick or Treatment,” is incredibly heartfelt and sad as the viewers watch the mounting amount of casualties in the war. A young man arrives, the only survivor of his platoon, and he grapples with his guilt by refusing to eat. It feels like a genuine situation that could happen today even when a holiday is in the middle of being celebrated. Not to mention, there are so many people who need attention in the episode that one man is sent to the group proclaimed dead with a tag and everything but it turns out he’s just badly injured. Imagine being the person who was responsible for that? M*A*S*H definitely makes you think as you watch it because it’s not meant to be just  a thirty minute time period filled with laughs. Might be a good thing to watch for those viewers who aren’t interested in comedy.
