Jim was an early moment where fans of The Walking Dead realized that anyone could die at any time, and while his death was not a gruesome one, it was still a hard hit lesson that anyone could die, something that happened to almost every member of that first season’s cast.

Jim had a tragic story before he finally bit the big one. He was on the run with his wife and children and he escaped while the walkers ate his family, making him a very depressed and withdrawn individual. Jim is with the survivors when Rick finally shows up and finds them, joining the group.

Jim then started to have nightmares and began to dig holes for the dead. It wouldn’t be long until he joined them.

Jim’s end came in the season one episode “Wildfire.” The bite that did Jim in came after a zombie attack on their camp but it wasn’t noticed until someone saw the blood and realized he was infected. Daryl wanted to kill him on the spot but Rick was compassionate. Instead, they let Jim decide his own fate. He didn’t want the bullet in the head and they left him by a tree to die and eventually become a walker himself.
